David Villa scores to lead New York City FC past D.C. United on the road

WASHINGTON -- David Villa scored his seventh goal in 10 games, Khiry Shelton added another and New York City FC beat D.C. United 2-0 on Sunday night.

Villa is tied with Portland's Fanendo Adi and San Jose's Chris Wondolowski for the MLS scoring lead.

In the 49th minute, Thomas McNamara flicked Shelton's cross and Villa powered a shot off the hands of goalkeeper Travis Worra. Four minutes later, Shelton jumped between two defenders and redirected Ronald Matarrita's cross for a 2-0 advantage.

New York City FC has won two straight after a seven-game winless run.

D.C. United had its best scoring chance in the 61st minute when Marcelo Sarvas' free kick from just outside the penalty area deflected off the post. United was without forward Fabian Espindola, who is tied for the team lead in goals.
