Bayern Munich held by Cologne after Anthony Modeste equaliser
Cologne became the first team to deny Bayern Munich victory in the Bundesliga this season as they picked up a deserved 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena.
Joshua Kimmich gave Bayern the lead five minutes before the end of a first half which the hosts dominated.
It was a different story in the second half, though, with Anthony Modeste bringing Cologne level, and they had the record champions on the ropes but failed to land a winning punch despite going close late on.
The result means both clubs remain unbeaten this season, although Carlo Ancelotti's Bayern left the field for the first time in the league this season without all three points following a previous run of five straight wins.
It was business as usual for Bayern from the get-go with the lively Arjen Robben sending in the first noteworthy shot of the game after 15 minutes, his effort just wide of the right-hand post.
The Dutchman then dinked a header over the top of the Cologne defence for Robert Lewandowski, who had drifted into an offside position and lifted his shot over anyway.
Rafinha blazed Bayern's next chance over the crossbar as the hosts doubled their efforts to make their possession count.
Yuya Osako delivered Cologne's first shot of the game midway through the first half, but Manuel Neuer was equal to it in the Bayern goal.
Modeste failed to make the most of a quick counter-attack which saw both he and Osako up against Javi Martinez.
But it was not long before their own defence was pierced, with Juan Bernat's cross met by an unmarked Kimmich, who headed the hosts in front five minutes before the interval.
Cologne had a strong shout for a penalty turned down early in the second half when Mats Hummels nudged Modeste to the ground inside the area, although the French forward would not have reached the cross anyway.
Martinez's effort came back off the post in the 55th minute as Bayern looked to take command, but seven minutes later they found themselves pegged back as Modeste stretched to meet Marcel Risse's cross and touch the ball in for an equaliser.
Cologne enjoyed a bright spell of possession which forced Bayern to defend more than they have in almost all of their Bundesliga fixtures this season put together.
Osako thought he had put the visitors in front with 20 minutes left, but the offside flag was rightly raised to curtail his and Cologne's celebrations.
Timo Horn then came to Cologne's rescue with a fine save from Thomas Muller's volley, turning the shot against the post, which was struck again by a Bernat effort from the edge of the penalty area with less than five minutes remaining.
However, it was Cologne who went the closest to snatching victory after that, when Artjoms Rudnevs sent Simon Zoller clear on the counter-attack in stoppage time, but he dragged his shot agonisingly wide of Neuer's far post.
