Leipzig were denied second spot in the Bundesliga as a late Borussia Monchengladbach goal saw them held to a 1-1 draw at home.

Leipzig took an early lead when Yussuf Poulsen took the ball down the right and crossed for Timo Werner, whose first touch was excellent, but it was a defensive mix-up which ultimately allowed the former Stuttgart forward to poke the ball in from close range.

The league newcomers were buoyed by their opening goal and had chances to build on it too with both Marcel Sabitzer and Marcel Halstenberg testing goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Gladbach were looking increasingly stale and lacked ideas to break down a well-drilled Leipzig defence until Lars Stindl found a way through inside the final 10 minutes.

His pass found Fabian Johnson, who shifted the ball inside his marker and onto his left foot before curling a low shot into the far corner of the net, silencing the Zentralstadion.

Leipzig went on the attack in the closing stages, with Oliver Burke inches away from scoring his first Bundesliga goal at the near post.

Ralph Hasenhuttl's men could not craft a winner, though, meaning they had to make do with a point which nevertheless extends their unbeaten start to life in the Bundesliga and keeps them in the top six.
