Clint Dempsey salvages stoppage-time draw for Sounders at Portland
Clint Dempsey scored an equalizing goal in the 94th minute to steal a point for the 10-man Seattle Sounders at the rival Portland Timbers on Sunday night.
Joevin Jones scored the opener for Seattle, but the game turned after Brad Evans was sent off for conceding a penalty in the 44th minute. Fanendo Adi scored from the spot, and Dairon Asprilla had time to add a second before the halftime whistle for the Timbers.
The Sounders offered little in response before Dempsey headed home a cross in stoppage time to salvage a draw at Providence Park.
After playing in three games in the span of eight days earlier this month, Dempsey started on the bench for the match -- which had its kickoff pushed back to the evening because of extreme heat in Portland -- before coming on in the second half to play the hero.
Portland had the first scoring opportunity as Diego Valeri was played in on goal in the 12th minute, only for Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei to make a fine save by sticking out a leg,
But it was Seattle that found the breakthrough in the 27th minute as Jones slotted home the rebound after his first shot was saved.
After a brief water break in the 87-degree heat, Asprilla hit the bar with a header from point-blank range.
It appeared the Sounders would enter the dressing room with the lead, but the Timbers turned the game around in the final two minutes of the first half.
Seattle defender Roman Torres failed to deal with a cross, which then fell to Darlington Nagbe in the center of the box. Evans was forced to lunge for the ball but caught the winger instead and the referee pointed to the spot before showing a red card.
Fanendo Adi scored the resulting penalty with his 50th career MLS goal to equalize, and the Sounders took the lead moments later.
Asprilla leapt high in the air to connect with David Guzman's corner and sent a powerful header past Timbers keeper Jake Gleeson on the final play of the first half.
Early in the second half, the 10-man Sounders put on the veteran Dempsey and rookie Nouhou in place of Jordan Morris and Jones in an effort to chase the game.
Dempsey, who was met by a chorus of boos from the Portland crowd, tried his luck from just inside the halfway line, and the ball floated just inches over the bar.
The Timbers nearly added a third goal after some confusion at the back from the Sounders, but Chad Marshall was able to usher the ball out for a corner shortly before taking a ball to the face, causing a brief halt in play.
The Sounders failed to put together much of an attack and appeared destined for a defeat until Torres made amends for his earlier error by sending in a late cross to Dempsey, who rose and sent a header to the back of the net.
