Seattle Sounders hold red-hot New England Revolution to draw
On the pitch for the third time in eight days, the visiting Seattle Sounders were content to play the streaking New England Revolution to a scoreless draw in their match Saturday night in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Seattle earned a 2-1 win on Wednesday at the Colorado Rapids after a 3-2 loss at the Portland Timbers last Saturday. The Sounders improved to 2-2-2 in their last six matches and are 2-5-2 on the road this season.
Although a disappointing result for the hosts, the Revolution stretched their unbeaten run to seven matches. New England's last loss in MLS play came May 19 against the Columbus Crew.
New England outshot the visitors 9-6, but each side was only able to put one shot on target with Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner and Sounders keeper Stefan Frei each preserving clean sheets.
New England had a solid chance to move in front in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, but Revs leading goal scorer Teal Bunbury was unable to beat his man to a cross that Frei smothered.
Revolution defender Gabriel Somi started the second half in place of Claude Dielna, whom the team broadcast said was dealing with an undisclosed injury.
Former Revs forward Clint Dempsey entered in the 61st minute and was given an ovation by the Gillette Stadium crowd. The longtime U.S. star spent three seasons with New England from 2004-06.
Seattle defender Chad Marshall made his 15th start of the season, giving him 11 consecutive MLS campaigns with at least 15 starts.
Sounders defender Kelvin Leerdam (right hamstring strain), forward Felix Chenkam (right hamstring strain) and goalie Calle Brown (concussion) all missed the match after being deemed questionable.
Seattle completes its three-match road trip next Sunday against Eastern Conference-leading Atlanta United. New England caps its three-game homestand next Saturday when it hosts Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the LA Galaxy.
