Minnesota 4-3 Toronto: Quintero's historic hat trick
Darwin Quintero scored Minnesota United's first ever hat trick on route to a 4-3 win over Toronto FC.
Darwin Quintero scored the first hat trick in the two-year MLS history of Minnesota United, and the Loons held on for a 4-3 victory over Toronto FC at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on Wednesday to break a three-game losing streak.
Quintero gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead in the first half. He made it 3-1 in the 52nd minute and doubled his season output with his sixth goal in the 57th minute.
Toronto made it 4-2 on Sebastian Giovinco's goal in the 70th minute, and Jordan Hamilton made it a frenetic finish when he scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Miguel Ibarra also scored and had an assist for Minnesota. Justin Morrow had a goal for Toronto in the 42nd minute to make it 2-1.
Toronto has lost three straight and is 1-4-2 in the past seven games.
Minnesota, the second-worst offense in MLS with only 19 goals entering the game, stunned the defending champions with a pair of goals in the opening 13 minutes.
Quintero scored a sublime goal in the 8th minute. He gathered a loose ball on the run and dribbled toward the box. Using Christian Ramirez as a decoy, Quintero created space and with the outside of his right foot bent the ball past goalkeeper Clint Irwin.
Ibarra doubled the count five minutes later. Defender Francisco Calvo, back from his stint at the World Cup with Costa Rica, fed a through-ball to Ibarra, and after a deft first touch, he beat an onrushing Irwin for his fourth goal.
Calvo was booked in the 49th minute and will miss Saturday's game at Houston because of yellow card accumulation.
After Morrow cut the deficit to 2-1, Quintero chipped the ball from 18 yards to regain the two-goal lead and used another lofted shot over Irwin for the 4-1 score.
Toronto plays at Sporting Kansas City on Saturday.
