Kei Kamara, Alphonso Davies lead Vancouver Whitecaps past Orlando City
Kei Kamara scored two goals and Alphonso Davies recorded a goal and three assists as the Vancouver Whitecaps beat visiting Orlando City SC 5-2 in Major League Soccer action Saturday.
Davies, 17, netted the go-ahead tally for a 2-1 Whitecaps lead on only his second career MLS goal in the 76th minute. He fired in second-half substitute Jordon Mutch's rebound from close range after Jakob Nerwinski launched the scoring play by sliding and preventing the ball from going over the end line.
As he slid and sent the ball back to Mutch, Nerwinski took an inadvertent kick in the head from an Orlando defender.
Yordy Reyna and Nicolas Mezquida also scored for the Whitecaps as they won their second straight match and extended their unbeaten streak to six games. Sacha Kljestan and Dom Dwyer tallied for the Lions, who suffered their fifth straight loss.
Kamara opened the scoring in the 36th minute as he fired a shot between two defenders after taking a cross from Davies from the left flank. Davies made a sensational run down the left side, kicking the ball past two opponents, and then cut inside a defender and threaded the pass to Kamara.
Orlando was forced to play with 10 players after Mohamed El-Munir took his second yellow card of the game, for unsporting behavior, in the 58th minute. He received his first caution for persistent infringement in the 27th minute.
But the Lions managed to draw even as Kljestan flicked Tony Rocha's pass from the left flank just inside the far post. Josue Colman started the play with a pass to Rocha from the middle.
But the Whitecaps quickly responded with Davies' goal.
Kamara added insurance with his second goal on a penalty kick in the 85th minute, after Reyna was taken down inside the Orlando box.
Reyna scored two minutes later, converting a pass from Davies, and Mezquida tallied in the 90th minute, also from Davies, who now ranks third in MLS with seven assists this season.
Dwyer closed out the scoring with a meaningless marker in stoppage time, with Colman picking up another secondary assist.
