Bayern Munich break Bundesliga goal record, thrash St Pauli without Harry Kane

Bayern Munich took their Bundesliga goal tally to a record 105 for the season as they closed in on another title with a 5-0 rout of St Pauli without Harry Kane.

Jamal Musiala's early strike at the Millerntor Stadion equalled the 101 goals the Bayern team of 1971-72, which included greats Franz Beckenbauer, Sepp Maier, Uli Hoeness and Gerd Muller, scored on their way to the title, but it was Leon Goretzka's effort which eclipsed that feat.

Michael Olise, Nicolas Jackson and Raphaël Guerreiro took the total to 105 on a night when things could hardly have gone better for head coach Vincent Kompany, who saw his team coast to victory to establish a 12-point lead over second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who had been beaten 1-0 at home by Bayer Leverkusen earlier in the day, with just five games to play.

Kane, who has 49 goals in all competitions this season, was named only among the substitutes as Kompany made seven changes ahead of Wednesday night's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid.

However, the England captain was barely missed as Bayern took a ninth-minute lead, Musiala registering the club's 101st goal of a remarkable league campaign with a free header from Konrad Laimer's inch-perfect cross.

Jackson was the man asked to fill Kane's boots and he was unfortunate not to make his mark two minutes later when his deflected shot looped on to the crossbar as goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj back-pedalled anxiously.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international was then relieved to see Olise drag a 17th-minute cross across the face of goal.

Vasilj saved from Jackson seconds later but needed the help of his left post to stop Musiala scoring a second goal after Joshua Kimmich and Guerreiro had combined to play him in.

To their credit, the hosts attempted to fight their way back into the contest and it took a fine block by Kim Min-jae to prevent Mathias Rasmussen's 29th-minute piledriver from causing Manuel Neuer problems.

Neuer had to deal with a Tomoya Ando header as Die Kiezkicker threatened from the resulting corner and the first half ended with just one goal separating the sides.

Goretzka saw appeals for a 49th-minute penalty waved away after he went down theatrically under Hauke Wahl's clumsy challenge, but he had the last laugh within four minutes when he volleyed home the second goal at the far post after Kimmich's free-kick had been flicked on by a defender.

It was 3-0 and game over within seconds when Goretzka and Olise combined to win back possession high up the pitch and the France international fired left-footed past the helpless Vasilj.

Jackson added his name to the scoresheet from Musiala's well-weighted 65th-minute pass before Guerreiro rounded off the scoring at the death.
