Manchester United's Jonny Evans not joining Everton - Roberto Martinez

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has denied his club are closing in on a move for Manchester United defender Jonny Evans.

Sources told ESPN FC this week that United are looking to offload Evans amid links with Everton, but it appears the Northern Ireland international will not be moving to Goodison Park.

Asked about the reports Everton are closing in on Evans, Martinez told reporters: "It's not true. There's nothing. I always said I'm not going to be commenting publicly on any of the names that have been shared around but I can tell you clearly that there is nothing true in that story."

Martinez also rejected reports Everton midfielder James McCarthy could be set for a move to Tottenham.

"There is absolutely no truth in that," he said. "James is a crucial player for us and we are building a team around him for the future.

"Whoever started circulating these rumours must have had their own reasons for doing so. As far as Evertonians are concerned, James is a vital asset who will serve the club for a long time."

Republic of Ireland international McCarthy, 24, joined Everton from Wigan for £13 million in 2013 and Martinez added: "We spent a huge amount of money to bring him to our football club. We're going to build a team around him and he's got a long-term contract with Everton.

"James enjoys his football and is an example for our group. As I said, we're going to build the future around him."
