Kevin Grosskreutz transfer to Galatasaray not official until January

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed midfielder Kevin Grosskreutz is heading to Galatasaray immediately even though he will not be able to play competitive football for his new club until the next transfer window in January.

The planned transfer fell through when the necessary paperwork was not delivered in time for Monday's deadline. FIFA declined to approve a request for an exemption.

Dortmund said the two clubs agreed that Grosskreutz would leave for Istanbul immediately, under the previously agreed conditions of the transfer, which were not disclosed.

Grosskreutz will be able to train and play friendlies and will sign when the next transfer period opens on Jan. 1, 2016.

In a statement on their website, Dortmund said: "FIFA has blocked the transfer of Kevin Grosskreutz to Turkish top flight outfit Galatasaray. An appeal lodged by Galatasaray against the decision was unsuccessful. Galatasaray informed BVB of the outcome on Wednesday.

"FIFA believe Galatasaray had not taken all of the necessary steps required to complete the planned transfer within the specified transfer window.

"Galatasaray and Kevin Grosskreutz expressed their wish for the transfer to be carried out at the next available opportunity and under the already agreed conditions.

"Up until his registration, which will provisionally take place on 1/1/2016, Kevin Grosskreutz will therefore become a Galatasaray player with immediate effect, allowing him to participate in his new club's training sessions and friendly matches."

A member of Germany's World Cup-winning squad, Grosskreutz had been dropped by new Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel after a public falling out and injury issues in preseason.

Earlier on Tuesday, Dortmund claimed the deal was "still open" because of late paperwork.

A statement on their website read: "As usual, Borussia Dortmund verifiably and without exception took all of the necessary steps required by the 'FIFA TMS' transfer system for the completion of a transfer -- with regard to both deadline and form. Football's world governing body FIFA will now clarify the matter."
