Mahmoud Dahoud will be hard to keep at Monchengladbach - Max Eberl

Borussia Monchengladbach have admitted that it will be difficult to tie Mahmoud Dahoud to a new contract.

The midfielder, 20, has two years left on his deal, and has regularly been linked with a switch to Premier League as one the breakout stars in Bundesliga last season.

Partnering with Granit Xhaka in Borussia Monchengladbach's holding midfield, the Syria-born star came close to winning a place on Germany's Euro 2016 squad after scoring five and setting up a further nine goals in his first fully professional season.

Though like other promising Bundesliga youngsters, Dahoud has been linked with a switch to Premier League, where Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool are said to be interested in him.

However, Gladbach are not keen on selling one of their biggest assets after Xhaka's departure to Arsenal, and hope to convince Dahoud to stay at the club beyond 2018 when his current deal expires.

"Of course, we try to prolong his contract," Die Fohlen sporting director Max Eberl told kicker, adding that his performances have put Dahoud on the radar of other clubs. "That's why it's a difficult issue for us."

However, Dahoud said that he has no plans to leave the club -- for now.

"I only focus on the moment," he said. "And who says that I have to leave Monchengladbach?"
