Newcastle complete loan deal for Chelsea winger Christian Atsu

Newcastle have completed the signing of Chelsea winger Christian Atsu on a one-year loan deal, the Championship club have confirmed.

Sources told ESPN FC on Monday that the Blues had granted Atsu permission to travel up to Tyneside for a medical after Newcastle reached an agreement to loan the 24-year-old with an option to buy next summer.

And the Ghana international has now become Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez's 11th major signing of a busy summer that has also seen Matt Ritchie, Dwight Gayle and Mohamed Diame arrive at St James' Park.

Benitez told Newcastle's official website: "I agreed with our fans that we needed to bring in another winger, so I am very happy to welcome Christian to the club.

"He has good ability and pace in the wide areas and also has good experience of English football.

"He has a different style of play to the other players we have at the moment and that will be important for the squad."

Atsu added: "I'm very happy to be at Newcastle. It's a very big club. They have good facilities and I think Newcastle have one of the best coaches in the world.

"St. James' Park is a fantastic stadium with 50,000 fans; the fans here really love football so much and I can't wait to play at this stadium in front of the fans."

Atsu joined Chelsea from Porto for £3.5 million in September 2013 but has yet to make his competitive debut for the Blues, instead spending time on loan at Vitesse Arnhem, Everton, Bournemouth and Malaga.
