Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez among possible Chelsea targets - sources

Chelsea are planning to sign a new striker in January to try and solve their goal-scoring problems, sources have told ESPN FC, with Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez and Paco Alcacer potential targets.

The reigning Premier League champions have struggled for goals so far this season, scoring 16 in 12 fixtures.

Last campaign's top scorer Diego Costa has scored two Premier League goals so far, while fellow strikers Radamel Falcao has scored once and Loic Remy has yet to net in the league with his two strikes coming in the Capital One Cup.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is seeking a proven goal scorer to aid the side's recovery, with the Blues currently 16th in the table.

Sources have told ESPN FC that the club are drawing up a list of potential targets for when the transfer window reopens in January with a new striker a top priority.

Former Manchester United forward Hernandez is a possible target having impressed at Bayer Leverkusen following his arrival in Germany in the summer.

The Mexico international has scored 12 goals in 19 games for club and country this season and his experience of the Premier League would make him an attractive proposition if Chelsea were to follow up their interest.

Leverkusen general manager Michael Schade said his club have hit the jackpot by signing Hernandez in the summer.

"He's a legend in Mexico and it's incredible the amount of media interest this has sparked," Schade said at a sponsorship meeting at the club's BayArena home on Monday. "He has exceeded all of our expectations, even for the Bayer [holding] company."

Schade explained how he is the 15th most followed footballer in the world on Twitter, and suggested it was not only his club, but the entire Bundesliga that is benefiting from the 27-year-old's global appeal.

Leverkusen have featured in the two most watched Bundesliga matches broadcast by Fox this season, and Schade is convinced this is due to the impact of the former United man.

"As an advertising package, he works without any concerns," added Schade.

Chelsea are also scouting Spain and Valencia striker Alcacer, with the player impressing for club and country during the last 12 months.

Alcacer has netted five goals in La Liga this term and scored five goals to help Spain qualify for Euro 2016, with the 22-year-old regarded as one of the best young strikers in Europe.
