Match Commentary

80'Rory Best, Ireland captain: "We knew to come here and get a victory was going to take a massive performance. We dug really deep to get that win -- there's a lot of boys running on empty there. We had to just keep going at them, we knew we had to take the game to them and credit to the boys -- the half-backs ran the game and a couple of boys came in at the end there to see us over the line."
80'South Africa captain Adriaan Strauss: "Easy mistakes and indiscipline ultimately cost us on the night. I think at times we did play good rugby but every time we got some momentum we lost the ball. The result is the most important thing and we're disappointed."
80'Devin Toner, named man of the match, speaks in stadium: "We did a lot of homework -- we put a lot of work into our defence. We're trying to get off the line and put some hits in. Thankfully it paid off today but that is really down to our homework."
80'This time it's good, and South Africa ship the ball out just as the hooter goes. Jantjies gets it to the Irish 22. Kolisi inside to Vermeulen, great tackle by Murray to prevent a breakthrough for South Africa there! Etzebeth forward, now left to Mvovo, to De Allende. TO JP PIETERSEN. FOR THE LINE. AND INTO TOUCH!!! That should be it! TMO time to make sure Pietersen was in touch. He was, for sure. Ireland have won!! For the first time ever in South Africa, Ireland -- with 14 men for three-quarters of this match -- have won, a famous victory!
80'Here we go... and the scrum collapses. Try again...
80'And the ball is ripped out by Jackson! Nope, referee is pulling that back and the scrum to South Africa will be the last play of the game.
80'Scrum restarts the clock. We've less than 60 seconds to go. Ireland have the ball in their own half but no drama. Murray lifts a high box kick to halfway. South Africa can attack...
80'+320-26 End of second half
79'They're up to halfway, Du Toit the latest to carry forward. Jantjies, to Pietersen, it's a knock on! That might just about be it. There won't be much time left after the restart. Can Ireland see it out?
78'The restart wouldn't have gone 10 but Ireland claim it in the air anyway and look to take their time through the phases. South Africa get it back but they're in their own 22 and needing a flash of inspiration.
77'Jackson breathes deeply, sizes up the posts, boots it goalwards -- it's over! It's a converted try or bust for South Africa!
77'Player substituted - Frans Malherbe , South Africa
77'Substitute on - Julian Redelinghuys , South Africa
77'Substitute on - Craig Gilroy , Ireland
77'Player substituted - Keith Earls , Ireland
77'20-26 Penalty goal - Paddy Jackson , Ireland
76'And just like that, penalty for coming in at the side against South Africa! Penalty in the Springbok 22, although far out to the right flank. Jackson will have another chance to make it a six-point game.
75'Ireland have the ball in their own half. Murray heaves a high one to midfield, Mvovo loses it under pressure and a kick ahead puts South Africa inside their own 22. They'll try and build a winning attack from there.
74'Player substituted - Jordi Murphy , Ireland
74'Substitute on - Rhys Ruddock , Ireland
73'South Africa trying to find a way through the Irish defence, which has been frenetic and impregnable for all but that errant Jackson pass in this second half. Pietersen burrows over halfway. Jantjies to Du Toit, but the ball is bundled out on the left flank. Great cover again from Ireland -- can they keep these waves of defence rolling on for another seven minutes?
72'Drop goal-missed
71'In response, there's a brilliant offload by Payne to Trimble and Ireland are deep in South African territory looking for the clinching score. Through the phases they go, Murray orchestrating at every breakdown, but then his pass to Earls leaves his man as a sitting duck and he is thumped by the South African defence. He somehow holds on to the ball and Ireland are up into double figures in phases. Back to Jackson ... drop goal attempt ... just wide, just to the right.
69'Jackson the culprit, telegraphing the inside pass along the Irish 22 and Du Toit just bursts straight onto it and under the posts. That 10-point lead lasted barely 45 seconds. It's back to nail-shredding time for Irish fans.
69'Oh dear oh dear oh dear! Ireland have just shot themselves in the foot - TRY FOR SOUTH AFRICA!
69'20-23 Conversion - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
69'18-23 Try - Pieter-Steph du Toit , South Africa
69'Substitute on - Rudy Paige , South Africa
69'Player substituted - Faf de Klerk , South Africa
69'Substitute on - Jesse Kriel , South Africa
69'Player substituted - Lionel Mapoe , South Africa
69'Substitute on - Ultan Dillane , Ireland
69'Player substituted - Iain Henderson , Ireland
68'It's through! It's a 10-point lead for 14-man Ireland! Can they claim their first ever victory on South African soil?
68'Substitute on - Sean Cronin , Ireland
68'Player substituted - Rory Best , Ireland
68'13-23 Penalty goal - Paddy Jackson , Ireland
67'Springboks losing any advantage they have with daft penalties. Going in over the top the latest infraction, and with the ball 10 metres inside the Boks' half, it's certainly worth Jackson having another pop to extend the Irish lead to 10 points.
66'Willie le Roux is left shaking his head as he fails to pick up a grubber in his own 22, instead fumbling it into touch. Ireland, however, waste the opportunity by crossing at the lineout, allowing South Africa to boot clear.
65'We're stuck in scrum reset purgatory -- we'll let you know when something actually happens.
63'You'd never guess which team had the man advantage if you didn't already know. South Africa really not making any inroads at all and Ireland beginning the get the scent of victory in their nostrils.
61'Not quite -- it had the distance, but it smacks off the face of the right post.
60'The Irish have really sorted their scrum out, as well -- they've just won a penalty from a continually reset scrum that had South Africa reeling. They'll have a look at the posts from here -- near halfway but right in the middle of the field. Jackson to make it a 10-point game...
59'Substitute on - Tadhg Furlong , Ireland
59'Player substituted - Mike Ross , Ireland
59'Substitute on - Trevor Nyakane , South Africa
59'Player substituted - Tendai Mtawarira , South Africa
57'Kolisi taking the game back to the Irish, a swashbuckling run that is far from his first in the match. More resilient defence breaks down the move though, with the ball going to ground when Mapoe looked like he was through.
56'Super defence again by Ireland, who turn the ball over through sniping by Rory Best -- maybe a little on the fringes of fairness, that one -- which allows another kicking clearance. Sterling work, and new defence coach Andy Farrell must be pretty pleased with his side's work.
56'Player substituted - Francois Louw , South Africa
56'Substitute on - Warren Whiteley , South Africa
56'Substitute on - Pieter-Steph du Toit , South Africa
56'Player substituted - Lood de Jager , South Africa
54'South Africa building the pressure nicely in Irish territory and Pietersen once again is the man testing the defence with some direct running rugby. South Africa five metres out now but Ireland's defence has been superb -- Devin Toner jumping on the ball at the breakdown and allowing Jackson to clear. It's a brief reprieve, but a reprieve all the same.
52'A bit of kicking back and forth and now South Africa are given a penalty for pulling down in the air at a lineout. A clearance by Jantjies from his 22 -- and it's a heck of a boot into the Irish midfield.
49'Super take from a high kick forward by Mvovo, who has looked dangerous throughout for the Boks. Loose ball though and Ireland have the advantage for a knock-on. Back it comes, scrum Ireland.
46'And now Paddy Jackson almost scores for Ireland! Another very clever kick forward after a brilliant dart from midfield, but De Klerk is back well to tap down for the drop-out. This is the moment, though, clearly for Ireland to try and make a strike for home while there is still gas in the tank.
45'And now Keith Earls almost gets Ireland clear again! He just can't quite get free down the left wing though, and it's booted downfield where South Africa can mop up.
45'A reminder that Ireland have never won in South Africa. They are seven points clear with 14 men - admittedly a long, long way from home, though.
43'Ireland have some momentum building with a rolling maul into South African territory. Murray told to use it, so he does, to Jackson, to Payne, to Trimble, but the ball hits the deck -- and somehow breaks for Connor Murray who darts for the line and is over! Try! TMO time though, as it looked suspiciously like a knock-on in the build-up. The replay shows that it looks like it came off a South African hand, the try will stand. Fourteen man Ireland lead again!
43'13-20 Conversion - Paddy Jackson , Ireland
43'13-18 Try - Conor Murray , Ireland
41'We are back underway in Cape Town -- good news over the half-time break that Patrick Lambie is up and about after being stretchered off following the incident that saw Stander red-carded.
41'+113-13 End of first half
40'Rolling maul from the lineout for the Boks as they look to take the lead at the break. Pietersen darts inside, now De Klerk slips it to Etzebeth, now Louw, another phase of recycled ball, De Allende carries forward -- the hooter rings around the stadium but South Africa keep their concentration and now have numbers on the left. Mvovo is brought down when it seems a certain score. They try again, then Mvovo and Louw look like they've managed to combine to score in the corner! TMO time -- and they're in touch! It's 13-13 at the break, but goodness me that was an eventful and controversial 40 minutes!
40'13-13 Start of second half
39'Chance for the Boks before the break as Pietersen again is the danger man down the right flank. It's recycled to De Jager but Iain Henderson to the rescue as he strips De Jager and turns the ball over for Jackson to clear. That was absolutely vital, especially with the clock ticking down.
37'And a quick-hit drop goal levels the scores. Nice build-up play and Jackson strokes it through wonderfully.
37'13-13 Drop goal - Paddy Jackson , Ireland
35'More trouble setting the scrum, but this time it's South Africa who are pinged for not pushing straight. A quick free kick and Ireland punt the ball into the South African 22 to try and build some pressure. Despite the red and yellow card, they only trail by three.
32'Conversion goes over, and the match will restart with Ireland down to 13 men.
32'It's going to be yellow for Henshaw -- Rory Best is trying to argue his man's case, but ultimately it's a dangerous tackle, which is high and in the neck area.
32'The decision has gone back to the TMO, but that could actually just be more bad news for Ireland, as Henshaw has clobbered Jantjies on the release of the final pass for Mvovo to score. The fly-half position is taking a pummelling today!
32'Penalty advantage to South Africa -- they won't need it! Mvovo bursts clear and the No.11 is over for the try!!
32'Yellow card - Robbie Henshaw , Ireland
32'13-10 Conversion - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
32'11-10 Try - Lwazi Mvovo , South Africa
30'Not for the first time, Murray can't feed an Ireland scrum and South Africa are awarded the put-in instead. Ireland's pack are getting rocked on their heels at the set.
29'Lineout for South Africa around the Irish 22. The ball is worked wide to Pietersen on the other flank, but when it starts coming back the other way, the referee blows for a forward pass. Just as well for Ireland, as the Springboks had numbers in hand on the overlap on the left.
27'Jackson kicks straight into touch from the restart and South Africa will have the put-in on halfway. Ireland need to regroup for a few minutes, you feel.
26'Penalty is slotted over by Elton Jantjies, and it's 10-6.
26'6-10 Penalty goal - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
25'South Africa looking to keep the pressure up and a rolling maul gets the crowd on its feet. Pietersen barrels in from the right flank looking for space and is held up. Louw tries to break through as well. The Irish defence has an hour to play like this! Ireland penalised for being off feet, and now it's Rory Best being given a talking to. How the worm has turned here, in the blink of an eye.
24'So after a bright start for Ireland pitched against South African indiscipline, it's now the Irish who will be a man down for the rest of the game.
23'Red card - CJ Stander , Ireland
23'Substitute on - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
23'Player substituted - Patrick Lambie , South Africa
22'It's a sad way for things to break for Stander, who almost certainly didn't mean to catch Lambie anywhere near as dangerously as he did. There's not a huge argument with a red card, all the same, and worrying to see Lambie being wheeled off on the stretcher cart. Such emotion at kick-off from Stander -- did it boil over there though?
22'It's a red - "there are not extenuating circumstances," explains the referee.
22'South Africa continue to press but eventually are pulled back for an Ireland infringement. Which gives the referee a chance to review the Lambie/Stander via the TMO. It's not pretty -- Stander attempted to block Lambie's kick but he turns his back and his rear absolutely clatters Lambie who is out cold before he even hits the deck. That's surely the end of Lambie's game -- is it the end of Stander's?
22'CJ Stander might be in trouble here - he's absolutely flattened Pat Lambie, who appears to be out cold in the middle of the pitch.
20'Brief scare for Ireland as Murray's attempted clearance is blocked by Pietersen but Jackson scrambles the ball clear. A reminder of Pietersen's pace and the fact that he doesn't need the ball in hand to be a menace.
19'Jackson will have a pop at goal from the right of the posts. Simple effort, and it's 10-3.
19'3-10 Penalty goal - Paddy Jackson , Ireland
18'Ireland replying in kind with a good attack of their own down the left, which earns another pending penalty. Stander bursts towards the line! He's held up, it's shipped to Jackson, then Murray to Murphy who barrels forward. Jackson hits a high one into the goal area but JP Pietersen claims that easily and we'll go back for the penalty.
16'Spanked through by Lambie, and the deficit is cut to four.
16'3-7 Penalty goal - Patrick Lambie , South Africa
15'Sniping play by De Klerk at scrum half for South Africa and they are finally getting a foothold in this game. No sooner is that said than they knock on -- De Klerk the culprit -- but it's coming back for a penalty for Ireland being off feet. Penalty in front of the posts and surely an easy three for the Boks.
13'Now, this is better! Good running rugby from the backs as it gets shipped to Willie Le Roux and his burst just about breaks it open completely. Ireland's defence reshapes just enough, Henshaw maybe getting away with a deliberate knock-on in the process, but Springbok lineout either way.
12'Conversion slotted easily, and it's 7-0 Ireland and a man advantage for the next 10 minutes.
12'0-7 Conversion - Paddy Jackson , Ireland
11'TRY! And a yellow card! Double jeopardy for the Springboks there and this is a pretty shambolic start to the Coetzee era.
11'Regardless of the outcome on the TMO decision, De Jager is going to see yellow for collapsing the maul.
11'Irish lineout, 5 metres out. It produces a driving maul and they're pushing, pushing, the maul is collapsed and that will bring a penalty, and a lovely grubber from Marshall allows Payne to touch down! Try! No? TMO! "Any reason why I cannot award the try?" Let's find out...
11'0-5 Try - Jared Payne , Ireland
11'Yellow card - Lood de Jager , South Africa
10'Driving maul from Ireland who are building nicely inside the South African 22. Murray, to Trimble, who is hit hard and knocks on. But it's coming back for another penalty against South Africa, and the Springboks are looking askance as to what is going on!
9'South Africa penalised again and Adriaan Strauss is spoken to by the referee, who is growing impatient with the disorganised approach of the Springboks.
8'Ireland have a lineout midway inside the South Africa half and despite it bouncing nicely for Murray, he is turned over almost immediately and South Africa will clear again. Early stages but it's all a bit patchy so far.
5'And it's wide right. Not exactly a confidence builder for Lambie, that should have been at the very least a closer effort than that.
5'Another penalty coming South Africa's way as Ireland hold on in the tackle and Luke Marshall is the man penalised. It will be a pot at goal for South Africa, 10 metres inside the Ireland half and right in front of the posts. Patrick Lambie lining it up...
4'Infringement by Ireland as Conor Murray takes too long to put in and the unsteadiness of the scrum goes against the tourists. South Africa clear their lines and Ireland will have a lineout on halfway.
3'Conor Murray hooks a high ball into the 22 and it's bundled into touch as a group of players jump together trying to claim it. They all fail, and Ireland will be given a scrum for a knock-on.
2'Another penalty to Ireland after they choose to go down the blindside and South Africa's defence refuses to release. Lineout on the 22 for Ireland as they make the early running.
1'And from the kick-off there is immediately a penalty to Ireland for being taken out in the air. JP Pietersen a little over zealous after a pretty good chase of a deep kick.
1'And we are off!
1'South Africa in all white change kit today, with Ireland in their traditional green jerseys and white shorts. South Africa will get things underway...
1'Anthem time - and emotion showing on the face of CJ Stander, the South African-born Ireland international returning to his homeland in his adopted nation's colours.
1'A generous reception for the Ireland team as they take to the field, while the Springboks are heralded by fireworks and fanfare.
1'
1'Irish rugby has already received a huge boost today with news from Manchester that the Under 20s have clinched an historic win over their New Zealand counterparts. They're now two wins from two games in the tournament -- having beaten Wales earlier in the week -- and must now be entertaining thoughts of a deep run in the knockout stages.
1'Hello and welcome to ESPN's coverage of the first Test between South Africa and Ireland in Cape Town. Allister Coetzee's reign in charge of the Springboks begins against a heavily altered Ireland who are looking to rebuild some confidence after a patchy Six Nations campaign.
1'0-0 Start of first half
