Match Commentary

81'23-12 End of second half
80'South Africa will be glad of the victory, but again they'll lament handling errors and basic mistakes. The Wallabies will also feel they left points on the pitch, but their performance will do little to quell those who want the end of Michael Cheika as Australia coach.
80'The game fades out to nothing with a final scrum that takes more than one minute to set. The siren sounds, and Handre Pollard kicks the ball high into the stands.
77'Aphiwe Dyantyi back on the field and pulls down the rampaging David Pocock with Dane Haylett-Petty in support.
77'Another mistake, with Andre Esterhuizen losing the ball forward in contact to end a first-phase attack.
77'Player substituted - Eben Etzebeth , South Africa
77'Substitute on - RG Snyman , South Africa
75'Australia going wide but without go forward, and South Africa, with time on their side, are able to fan across, and their is little sign of the Wallabies now being able to break the line again.
72'Australia awarded the first scrum penalty of the game, and Matt Toomua clears into South African territory with a banana kick. The visitors win the lineout but then cruel themselves with a handling error.
71'South Africa win the lineout but then lose the ball forward. Really is a game of basic errors.
70'Big hit in midfield from Siya Kolisi and Australia lose the ball forward; Faf de Klerk roosts the ball deep into Australian territory to relieve pressure but Australia clear their lines for a South African lineout outside the Wallabies 22.
70'Substitute on - Rory Arnold , Australia
70'Player substituted - Izack Rodda , Australia
70'Substitute on - Nick Phipps , Australia
70'Player substituted - Will Genia , Australia
70'Player substituted - Adam Coleman , Australia
70'Substitute on - Rob Simmons , Australia
70'Player substituted - Malcolm Marx , South Africa
70'Substitute on - Bongi Mbonambi , South Africa
69'Huge mistake from Handre Pollard, whose penalty goes fractionally too far -- going into touch in goal. We're back for a scrum left of centre just inside South African territory.
68'Breathless spell of play, and the players are grateful for a break to take on water.
66'Australia break after Siya Kolisi can't make a tackle inside the Wallabies' 22. Michael Hooper hacks clear and now we're back in Springboks territory. Series of counter-rucks, Australia lose the ball -- or do South Africa win it -- and the Boks are attacking through Cheslin Kolbe.
65'Yellow card - Aphiwe Dyantyi , South Africa
63'Player substituted - Folau Fainga'a , Australia
63'Substitute on - Brandon Paenga-Amosa , Australia
63'Substitute on - Wilco Louw , South Africa
63'Player substituted - Frans Malherbe , South Africa
62'Springboks now have been asked to make 120 tackles to the Wallabies 53. Familiar to Wellington, and they're withstanding Australia. They're tackling at 87 percent also.
62'Another penalty to the Wallabies, with Aphiwe Dyantyi pinged for not releasing the player on the ground.
62'Handling errors from the Wallabies, but they're awarded a scrum after Faf de Klerk knocks on going for an intercept.
61'Handre Pollard fails to find touch and Kurtley Beale puts Australia firmly on the attack again. Australia win a scrum in South Africa territory after a knock-on by the Boks. South Africa can't get out of their 22 here, and one feels the Australia must score here if they are to get anything out of the game.
59'Australia work a first-phase attack to put Reece Hodge into space on the right wing, but Aphiwe Dyantyi gets across to prevent the centre scoring again.

59'Player substituted - Jack Maddocks , Australia
59'Substitute on - Bernard Foley , Australia
57'We come back to the penalty conceded by Jesse Kriel, not rolling away at the tackle. Jerome Garces has just told the Springboks "no more".
56'Australia putting the ball through phases, and changing the point of attack under penalty advantage.
55'South Africa concede a penalty by dragging down the maul, and Australia elect to set a 5m scrum.
54'We've had a little lull in the action with little happening. Matt Toomua has just roosted a penalty deep into Springboks territory, and the Wallabies are firmly on the attack with a 5m lineout.
50'Player substituted - Taniela Tupou , Australia
50'Substitute on - Allan Alaalatoa , Australia
50'Substitute on - Sekope Kepu , Australia
50'Player substituted - Scott Sio , Australia
48'
48'Springboks rumble into Australian territory with a strong driving maul from a lineout taken by Eben Etzebeth. Australia actually do well to stop the rumble. Springboks go back to the blindside to make even more space but again a simple error kills the momentum.
47'Tremendous break down the down left from the Boks, with Malcolm Marx and Siya Kolisi combining to put Aphiwe Dyantyi into space. Australia's scrambling defence stops the winger, who puts the ball back inside but Pieter-Steph du Toit can't quit grab the pill at his bootlaces.
46'23-12 Penalty goal - Handre Pollard , South Africa
45'We go back for a penalty in the defensive line, and Handre Pollard is on target once again to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
45'Substitute on - Marco van Staden , South Africa
45'Player substituted - Sikhumbuzo Notshe , South Africa
43'Jesse Kriel grubbers behind Australia's defence from halfway on a first-phase move but the ball just goes into touch ahead of Aphiwe Dyantyi. Great vision from the centre to spot the space behind the flat defensive line.
43'Substitute on - Steven Kitshoff , South Africa
43'Player substituted - Tendai Mtawarira , South Africa
42'South Africa's defence seems to lack the power, pace and intensity of the first 25-30 minutes. Australia in the opening couple of minutes seem to be slightly more on the front foot.
41'Loose pass from Tendai Mtawarira, and Michael Hooper collects the ball on the ground to put Australia on the front foot.
41'We're back underway with Matt Toomua kicking off.
41'+120-12 End of first half
41'+120-12 Penalty goal - Handre Pollard , South Africa
40'And that's halftime. South Africa thoroughly dominant and likely they should be further ahead on the scoreboard. Australia have not really been in the game, but two wonderful attacks and they are in it. All to play for in the second half.
40'Wonderful work from Siya Kolisi at the breakdown to win a penalty. Willie le Roux spills a simple ball under advantage, but Handre Pollard has an opportunity to put a full point on the first half.
40'20-12 Start of second half
38'Sprinboks charging again after a soft penalty concedes them territory and another attacking lineout. The Boks' setpiece malfunctions again, only to be save by Cheslin Kolbe in the loose. Eben Etzebeth makes god ground in midfield but the Boks cruel themselves with another handling error.
35'Boks almost immediately concede another penalty, inside Australian territory, and up steps Reece Hodge. No problem with the distance but direction a different matter.
34'17-12 Penalty goal - Handre Pollard , South Africa
33'Good decision by the Boks to go for the points. Might have gone for the corner again but chose for three certain points rather than five or seven potential points. Maybe had the Wallabies not come back so strongly they'd have gone for the corner...
32'South Africa firmly on the attack under penalty advantage for offisde on the Australian goalline after two strong changes from Tendai Mtawarira. Boks then go wide but Cheslin Kolbe can't drag down the ball in the corner.
32'Player substituted - Marika Koroibete , Australia
32'Substitute on - Jack Maddocks , Australia
30'South Africa have dominated the game to this point, but they lead only by two points after two superb tries from Australia against the run of play. Boks fans will hope their heroes remember the lessons of Wellington.
30'14-12 Conversion - Matt Toomua , Australia
29'14-10 Try - Will Genia , Australia
28'Brilliant try from the Wallabies. Dane Haylett-Petty broke two tackles before offloading and Marika Koroibete displayed afterburners to beat his man and then feed the supporting Will Genia to go clear.
26'14-5 Try - Reece Hodge , Australia
25'
25'Reece Hodge has silenced the crowd, touching down in the right corner after a tremendous pass from Will Genia cutout maybe three defenders to put the centre on the outside of Aphiwe Dyantyi. Australia needed that.
25'Apologies for the break in commentary due to technical issues. Faf de Klerk scored for South Africa, running a sensation support line to capitalise on a scything break from Handre Pollard.

22'14-0 Conversion - Handre Pollard , South Africa
21'12-0 Try - Faf de Klerk , South Africa
16'Wonderful break by the Boks from their own 22, a floated pass from Willie le Roux to Jesse Kriel on the right flank. Siya Kolisi then sells a wonderful dummy on halfway to get into open space but he's tackled by the scrambling Marika Koroibete, and the chance goes begging.
14'David Pocock wins another penalty at the breakdown and Australia are able finally to get out of their half after the Boks fail with a set play from a scrum.
12'South Africa go back for a penalty after Wallabies penalised for collapsing a maul, and Handre Pollard goes for the right corner. Australia defuse another attack and then clear their lines after David Pocock wins a penalty at the breakdown.
12'Wonderful second phase play from the Boks after a lineout and a rolling maul, spinning wide but Aphiwe Dyantyi can't hang on to a pill from Willie le Roux.
10'Springboks have made a strong start even despite the gift of a try. Hard-hitting in defence, physical with the ball in tight and also firmly on the front foot when they try to go wide. Australia to this point are yet to feature in a meaningful fashion.
8'
8'South Africa's offensive defensive is really bringing the crowd into play, encouraging them to get involved even when the Boks don't have the ball. Wonderful atmosphere, as ever, in Port Elizabeth.
7'Adam Coleman wins the lineout for Australia, wonderfully, and the Wallabies clear their lines.
7'South Africa win another penalty with their physical defence, and Handre Pollard goes for the corner. 5m attacking lineout.
4'Pieter-Steph du Toit and Franco Mostert hammer Dane Haylett-Petty behind the gainline, and the Boks are awarded a penalty after the fullback hangs on to the pill at the breakdown.
4'Matt Toomua going for goal after Springboks penalised at the ruck but the ball slides by the sticks to the left.
3'South Africa seem to be quick out of their defensive blocks again, as they were in Wellington; they're hitting Australia hard on or behind the gainline.
2'7-0 Conversion - Handre Pollard , South Africa
1'South Africa are on the board in amazing fashion. Kurtley Beale tries to go wide under pressure on his goalline under the posts and Aphiwe Dyantyi intercepts to score his first try against Australia. What a start!
1'We're underway with Handre Pollard kicking off the 87th Test between the teams.
1'Emotional renditions of the anthems, as ever.

1'Welcome to our Live Text commentary of the Rugby Championship Round 5 Test between South Africa and Australia in Port Elizabeth.

Rassie Erasmus suggested he was under pressure for his position as Springboks head coach after the defeat by Australia in Round 3, but, oh, how his players responded to beat the All Blacks in Wellington. Wallabies coach Michael Cheika remains under pressure, however, after his side slumped to defeat by Argentina on the Gold Coast.

John Goliath and Sam Bruce have previewed the weekend action, and they're suggesting: "The Springboks don't have to look further than what worked for them against the All Blacks. The Springboks' line speed on defence was superb and their gang-tackling brutal, and this forced the All Blacks to make mistakes and rushed them into terrible decisions on attack ... the Wallabies have very good outside backs, and they must try and stretch the Springboks and attack the wider channels, where players like captain Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth and Pieter-Steph du Toit are least likely to be to knock the stuffing out them."

John Goliath's pre-game assessment that Springboks need to shed Jekyll and Hyde tag is another good read before kick-off.
