No. 1 Baylor women win 19th in a row 76-44 over Oklahoma St
WACO, Texas -- Kalani Brown was getting frustrated during her final regular season home game for top-ranked Baylor when missing some point-blank shots.
In the end, Brown had another double-double, and the Big 12 champion Lady Bears had another lopsided victory.
Brown scored 10 of her 14 points after halftime when Baylor pulled away for a 76-44 victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday to extend its winning streak to 19.
"You're putting it on the glass, you're doing everything right, and they roll out. I was just like," Brown said before pausing with an exasperated sigh. "But you just keep shooting it."
Baylor (27-1, 17-0) had its lowest-scoring half in conference play this season while taking a 25-20 halftime lead. Brown, the 6-foot-7 senior center who was only 2-of-7 shooting before the break, made two field goals and two free throws as the Lady Bears scored the first 11 points after halftime.
Brown also had 13 rebounds, 10 of those before halftime.
Baylor outscored the Cowgirls 51-24 in the second half and held them to 27 percent shooting overall after smothering Texas to 20 percent earlier this week.
"That's a commitment to defense," coach Kim Mulkey said. "And I'll recruit kids all day long if they want to guard somebody and do it on a consistent basis."
Juicy Landrum also had 14 points for the Lady Bears, who won their 40th consecutive regular season Big 12 game, four short of the league record they set from 2011-14. They have won 37 home games in a row overall.
"They just wear you down with their strength and size. We had some opportunities and some shots that I thought we could maybe be even at halftime," Oklahoma State coach Jim Littell said. "In second half, they ran to the block, buried us underneath the goal post and shot 2-footers or we fouled them. It's just a lot for us to handle with their size and strength."
Vivian Gray scored 23 points for Oklahoma State (14-14, 5-12), which made only 14 of 52 field goal attempts. It was her 16th game this season with at least 20 points.
Gray made the game's first shot and had the first six points for the Cowgirls, who didn't trail until Chloe Jackson's three-point play with just over a minute left in the first quarter put Baylor up 13-12. The Lady Bears went ahead to stay after Queen Egbo had consecutive layups midway through the second quarter as part of a 12-4 run.
"I thought Queen was our spark plug in the first half," Mulkey said. "She just has unbelievable athleticism, and she was our spark plug in the first half."
Egbo had 11 points and 10 rebounds. NaLyssa Smith had 11 rebounds.
BIG PICTURE
Oklahoma State: Gray got no help, and the Cowgirls had no answer when Baylor got rolling. Oklahoma State has lost 10 of its last 12 games. Both teams had 24 rebounds at halftime, but Baylor outrebounded Oklahoma State 36-8 after that. ... The Cowgirls are 0-7 against Top 25 teams this season.
Baylor: The Lady Bears have a chance to finish undefeated in Big 12 play for the second season in a row, and the fourth time in eight years. Baylor will play at home again this season when it hosts games for the first two rounds of the women's NCAA Tournament.
