India's Kidambi Srikanth defeated Lee Hyun-il on Sunday to win the Denmark Open Superseries Premier, becoming the first Indian man to win three Superseries titles in a year.

He is the only player to win two men's singles Superseries Premier titles this year. Before winning the Denmark Open, he had won the Indonesia Open and Australian Open in June.

Number of times Srikanth has defeated the World No. 1 this year. While he had previously defeated the then No. 1 Son Wan Ho at the Australian Open and the Indonesia Open, he defeated the currently top-ranked Viktor Axelsen in the quarterfinals in Denmark.

This is Srikanth's fifth Superseries title overall and third this year after the Indonesia Open and Australian Open. He also won the China Open in 2014 and the India Open in 2015.

He is the second Indian man and the third Indian to win the Denmark Open after Prakash Padukone in 1979-80 and Saina Nehwal in 2012. Srikanth, with five titles, is the second-most successful Indian in Superseries events, after Saina Nehwal (10) and ahead of PV Sindhu (3). He is also only the second Indian after Saina to win three or more Superseries events in a year. Saina had won the Indonesia Open, Singapore Open and the Hong Kong Open in 2010.

Srikanth's four Superseries finals is the most by a men's singles player this year, having also won his maiden Indonesia Open and Australian Open titles after finishing runners-up at the Singapore Open. World No. 3 Lee Chong Wei is next best with three finals, at the All England Open, Malaysian Open and Japan Open.

Only three male players have won more Superseries titles than Srikanth -- Lee Chong Wei (45), Lin Dan (21) and Chen Long (17). Sony Dwi Kuncoro (5) and Chen Jin (5) are tied with him in fourth place.

Reigning World champion Axelsen was on a 13-match winning streak after winning the World Championships and Japan Open, the last two tournaments he had participated in before the Denmark Open. Srikanth ended this streak after defeating him in three games in the quarters.

This is the first calendar year where an Indian has won one of the singles titles at as many as six Superseries events. The Indian players' title-winning run began with PV Sindhu's win over Carolina Marin at the India Open final, followed by B Sai Praneeth's win over Srikanth at the Singapore Open. Srikanth then went on to win the Indonesia Open and the Australian Open, beating Kazumasa Sakai and Chen Long in the final respectively. Sindhu then won the Korea Open final against Nozomi Okuhara before Srikanth won his third title at the Denmark Open.
