Cubs run themselves out of rally, can't solve Matt Harvey in Game 1

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs finally got to New York Mets starter Matt Harvey in the fifth inning Saturday after he retired the first 12 batters to start the game. A hit-by-pitch on an 0-2 count to Anthony Rizzo followed by a misplay in center field on a ball hit by Starlin Castro tied the game 1-1. But Castro didn't run full speed out of the box, so he didn't make it to third on the play. He then broke for home on a single by Javier Baez only to be thrown out at the plate by left fielder Yoenis Cespedes.

That play would prove costly when Jon Lester gave up a two-out RBI hit on an 0-2 pitch to Curtis Granderson in the bottom of the inning, then a solo home run to Travis d'Arnaud in the sixth. A shallow sacrifice fly plated the Mets' final run in the seventh as Kyle Schwarber's fourth postseason home run in the eighth cut the lead to 4-2, but that's how Game 1 of the National League Championship Series would end. Lester gave up two solo home runs and the Mets stole two bases on him as he suffered the loss.

Thumbs up: After getting hit by a pitch, Rizzo also got on base via a walk, showing the same ability to reach as he did in the regular season. Both plays led off innings, creating some chances for the Cubs.

Thumbs down: Castro could have been on third base on his hit to center in the fifth, but instead only reached second. Sending him home on Baez's single on the next play wasn't a good call by third-base coach Gary Jones considering the arm in left field. Cespedes has one of the best in the league, and even though the bottom of the order was due up after Baez, the out at home killed the inning. The Mets quickly scored in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead for good.

What's next: The Cubs send Jake Arrieta and his 24 wins (22 in the regular season, two in the postseason) to the mound coming off his worst performance in three months -- though he won against the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 3 of the division series. Cubs manager Joe Maddon could make changes to his lineup against righty Noah Syndergaard as Tommy La Stella and Chris Coghlan are available to him from the left side. Lefty Miguel Montero will undoubtedly start as well behind the plate.
