The only storyline that matters off Wednesday’s announcement of the matchups for the Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classicis this: Duke will be the show at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

On Dec. 6, 2016, Purdue will face Arizona State before Duke battles Florida in the event, which ESPN will televise as part of Jimmy V Week for Cancer Research.

Here are a few things to consider for both matchups.

Duke vs. Florida

At stake for Duke: The Blue Devils, who boast the No. 2 recruiting class in the country per RecruitingNation, will field the nation’s most talented nucleus in 2016-17, a truth that should lead to a No. 1 preseason ranking for Mike Krzyzewski’s squad. He has the No. 1 (Harry Giles), No. 3 (Jayson Tatum) and No. 10 (Frank Jackson) prospects in the country.Preseason All-American guard Grayson Allen is back, too. Amile Jefferson, who missed most of 2015-16, will play a fifth year. Everything about this roster says, “I’ll see you in Phoenix for the Final Four.” But young talent often demands time to adjust to the collegiate level and the demands of a coach with five national championships. So this early December showcase could feature a Duke squad that’s rich with talent but still working on chemistry and rhythm. The bottom line is that it’s another chance to watch an elite program with a rare collection of talent.

At stake for Florida: The good news for Mike White’s program? Any time you face Duke, you know folks are watching – including the recruits you’ll need to mold your squad into a national power again. Florida will enter 2016-17 with a young team that should take the next step. But the loss of Dorian Finney-Smith hurts. With five of the team’s top six scorers returning, however, the Gators should grow. A matchup against Duke is a win-win for Florida. You either leave the floor with a loss to one of the best teams in America, a beneficial test prior to conference play, or your young squad scores a significant upset. This is also a chance for Devin Robinson and others to show the college basketball world they’re ready to fulfill their potential.

Purdue vs. Arizona State

At stake for Purdue: Matt Painter’s program is not solid yet. Kendall Stephens will transfer and Caleb Swanigan could remain in the NBA draft. All of that after losing a trio of talent: A.J. Hammons, Rapheal Davis and Johnny Hill. But if Swanigan comes back to West Lafayette, we’ll have a chance to see one of the nation’s top frontcourts with the sophomore competing next to Isaac Haas in a game that might display Purdue’s growth or regression since last season.

At stake for Arizona State: Bobby Hurley is still building. And a good performance in a high-profile event will boost that process. But we still have questions about the Sun Devils, who lost Savon Goodman (transfer) and Gerry Blakes from last season. Is Tra Holder a star? What impact will the program’s top 25 recruiting class make? How good is Shannon Evans, the guard who sat out last season after transferring from Buffalo (he averaged 15.4 ppg in 2014-15)? The Sun Devils won’t answer every question, but a lopsided loss to a rebuilding Purdue squad would only lead to more queries.
