March 7 DFS NBA building blocks, sleepers

Stephen Curry looks like a good play tonight, coming off one of his worst games this season. Oscar Baldizon/NBAE/Getty Images

As part of ESPN Fantasy's efforts to provide daily fantasy gamers intel on whom to target in DFS, our fantasy basketball experts are here to show you which players they are building their teams around and which sleepers they are taking fliers on. Today's panel features picks from Joe Kaiser, Tom Carpenter, Cynthia Frelund, Renee Miller, Jungkyu Lee and DFS Boot Camp's Al Zeidenfeld.

Renee Miller: Kemba Walker, PG, Charlotte Hornets

I expect Walker to have a lower ownership than most building blocks tonight, but I can't get away from him. He's playing terrific basketball right now, gets a home game where he has always played significantly better (around three fantasy points more per game on FanDuel and DraftKings at home vs. away, per the RotoViz game splits app), and a matchup with the Minnesota Timberwolves, who have been a top-six fantasy matchup for point guards this season. His mid-range price is perfect to build around, with expensive big men being particularly attractive today.

Tom Carpenter: Stephen Curry, PG, Golden State Warriors

Curry missed 14 of his 20 shots Sunday against the Los Angeles Lakers and 19 of his past 25 3-pointers (over two games). On the season, he has shot 51 perfect from the field and 45.9 from 3. So, let’s just play the odds here and expect him to return to form tonight against an Orlando Magic team he recently torched for 51 points and 10 3-pointers.

Joe Kaiser: Curry

How does the best team in the NBA respond after an embarrassing road loss to the lowly Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday? That’s what everyone is eager to see tonight, and I expect Curry to come up big. After all, the only thing rarer than Curry going 6-for-20 from the field and 1-for-10 from 3-point range like he did in Los Angeles is for him to shoot poorly two games in a row. Against Elfrid Payton and the struggling Magic -- a team Curry put up 51 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists against less than two weeks ago -- look for the reigning MVP to have a huge game.

Jungkyu Lee: Curry

I have a feeling that the Warriors are going to come out with something to prove after a surprising loss to the Lakers last night, and I like Curry to rebound from a subpar performance. The Magic have been playing at the league’s highest pace in the last two weeks, with the Warriors not far behind (fifth). According to Synergy Sports, the Magic rank among the bottom third in the league in transition defense and opponents have a 62.9 effective field goal percentage against them (26th). And remember, Curry scored 51 points just 12 days ago against the Magic, one of his three 50-point performances this season.

Alvin Zeidenfeld: DeMarcus Cousins, C, Sacramento Kings

In his battles against Anthony Davis, Cousins has really held the upper hand; in fact, he has been otherworldly against the Pelicans. In his last seven matchups against New Orleans, Cousins has averaged 28.9 points, 15 rebounds, 4.7 assists with 2.3 blocks, which is good for an average of 61.6 DraftKings points. New Orleans’ implied team total this evening sits at approximately 111 points, in what should be a very competitive game.

Cynthia Frelund: Jerryd Bayless, PG, Milwaukee Bucks

With Michael Carter-Williams out tonight, I have Bayless projected to play 30 minutes. He’s averaged over 31 minutes in the four games where MCW has been sidelined and the Bulls are near the bottom of the league in terms of giving up points to PGs. I expect a productive game from him tonight.

Sleeper

Miller: Pau Gasol, PF, Chicago Bulls

This play is more for DraftKings for the proportion of your salary that he costs you and for the fact that you can use only one center-eligible player on FanDuel. Gasol has been a bit up and down but the one thing you can count on with him is taking advantage of good matchups. The Bucks frontcourt is a favorite DFS target going back years, and recently has allowed the second-most fantasy points to opposing centers (DK). Gasol has averaged 50 DraftKings points against them in two meetings this season, but because of the plethora of high-priced big men in good situations tonight, he might go underowned tonight. He makes a strong play in all formats.

Carpenter: Tristan Thompson, PF, Cleveland Cavaliers

He is facing a Grizzlies team that sports the third-oldest roster in the league and is playing their third game in four days (including Sunday). The Grizzlies’ frontcourt remains old and thin, plus the team ranks just 27th in rebounding rate over the past month. This is just the type of matchup where Thompson should pay off.

Lee: Jrue Holiday, PG, New Orleans Pelicans

If you want to have a more balanced lineup, I think Holiday is a perfect sleeper at point guard tonight. Although Holiday doesn’t start, his minutes per game average has risen every month this season, including playing a season-high 37 minutes in his last game. The Kings have allowed the most points per game to opposing point guards this season and Holiday’s usage rate since the start of February is a whopping 31.5 percent, eighth in the league during that stretch. Expect plenty of scoring opportunities for Holiday tonight.

Zeidenfeld: Cody Zeller, PF, Charlotte Hornets

Both Zeller's minutes and production are up over the past three games, but his salary has gone down just a touch. I'm not expecting a huge breakout game but sometimes you have to take the value where it lays and use the salary on players that you feel have the most upside. There are plenty of players I want to pay for and Zeller can help unlock them while also coming in at a very low percentage-owned number tonight.

Kaiser: Aaron Gordon, PF, Orlando Magic

Gordon has emerged as one of the most active young forwards in the game over the past month, and you have to expect the San Jose, Calif. native to play with everything he has in front of his friends and family in the Bay Area tonight. Gordon had 19 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and a block when the Magic hosted the Warriors back on Feb. 25, and given the way the Warriors defense has been shaky of late, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the second-year pro post similar numbers on Monday.

Frelund: Nikola Vucevic, PF, Orlando Magic

Part of the reason I have him as a sleeper is because he’s playing the Warriors the day after a very uncharacteristic loss. The other part is because he’s at that weird $7,500 (DK) and $8,000 (FD) price. Since Tobias Harris got traded, Vucevic has averaged over 22 points and almost 10 boards a game.
