Founder of National Federation record book has listing of player with 15 TD passes for one game.

It’s getting to be an all-too-familiar pattern. Player puts up huge statistical totals. Reporters everywhere go nuts, most of the time citing state records (and most of the time without crediting the source of those records, which is Cal-Hi Sports) and most of the time there is incorrect information.

It’s not even September yet and it’s happened again, this time in the case of Folsom sophomore quarterback Jake Browning. Following David Graves, Dano Graves and Tanner Trosin, Browning is apparently the latest in a string of Folsom quarterbacks who is going to put up prolific stats.

In a 66-28 victory over Woodcreek of Roseville on Friday night, Browning completed 34 of 51 passes for 689 yards and 10 touchdowns. Since he’s a sophomore and based on the system he is in, barring injury Browning could be on his way to throwing for 15,000 yards or more in the next three years.

According to the Cal-Hi Sports state record book, Browning’s single-game touchdown pass total ties the state record and his single-game yardage total ranks No. 2 on the all-time state list.

It does not, however, tie the national record. This is based on the files of national record book founder Doug Huff of Wheeling, West Virginia. Huff’s work on national records dates back to the 1960s and his football and boys basketball records were the basis of the current National Federation lists.

Here is Doug’s take on Browning’s 10 touchdown passes for one game:

“The most TD passes in a game last year was 10 by freshman Tucker Israel of Lake Nora vs. Celebration (both Orlando, Fla. schools) on Oct. 13, 2011. Browning becomes the seventh to pass for 10 in one game, but is five shy of the long-time RECORD of 15 by Arthur Smith of Cozad (Neb.) vs. Overton (Neb.) in a state-record 201-7 rout in 1921. That mark has been in the Nebraska record book for at least 30 years.”

Huff, who has been a colleague of ours for 13 years with Student Sports and ESPN, added that there also was a player who threw for 11 touchdowns in one game last year, but that was in a six-man contest.

California’s all-time best of 10 touchdown passes for one game was first set in 1999 by David Koral from Palisades of Pacific Palisades in a game against Camp Kilpatrick of Malibu. Koral was a junior at the time and the next season he set the single-game state and national record of 764 yards in a victory by the Dolphins over Grant of Van Nuys.

Last season, Folsom’s Trosin passed for 601 yards for the Bulldogs in a win against Deer Valley of Antioch. That total is now No. 4 on the all-time state list behind Koral (764), Browning (689) and Robert Fuller from San Bernardinio (604 yards in game against Pacific of San Bernardino in 2006).
