UA jersey tour: QB Dwayne Haskins Jr.

POTOMAC, Md. -- Dwayne Haskins Jr. was presented with his Under Armour All America jersey on Wednesday afternoon, in a ceremony attended by friends and family.

For the 6-foot-3, 204-pound quarterback and No. 23-ranked prospect in the ESPN 300, the chance to play in the top postseason all-star game has a lot of meaning having watched some of the many alumni that starred in college, and now in the NFL.

“It means a lot for me to be in the Under Armour All-America Game,” said Haskins. “Just growing up watching the game, watching guys like Julio Jones, A.J. Green, Marquise Lee and Amari Cooper, it was fun. Quarterbacks like Jameis Winston and Matt Barkley played and make you want to play in that game. Then there are coaches like Herm Edwards and Steve Mariucci and there are a lot of selling points with Under Armour too -- you just want to be a part of it.”

Wednesday was a big day for the Bullis School as well. While the prestigious school has produced a number of Under Armour All-America selections in lacrosse and basketball, Haskins Jr. was its first on the gridiron.

“It means a lot to the school and myself,” Haskins said. “The Bullis School has been on the up for a long time now, and we are getting a lot of talented student-athletes here for football, baseball, lacrosse and basketball. It’s not just a great academic school, but a great athletic school as well. For myself, it’s a dream come true to be an Under Armour All-America, and to be the first for The Bullis School is also noteworthy. It’s a great blessing,”

Bullis School head coach Pat Cilento echoed the statements of his star quarterback.

“It’s a great accomplishment for Dwayne, but also a big accomplishment for the school,” Said Cilento. “I know we have had quite a few Under Armour lacrosse players, a basketball player and had a few players make it to the NFL, but as far as being in the Under Armour All-America Game; it’s a big deal,”

Haskins Jr. has helped elevate the status of the Bullis School on the field, according to Cilento. But Cilento spent time Wednesday praising the player off the field as well.

“Every kid wants to play with a player of his caliber, and his personality,” Cilento said. “His teammates love him, the student body loves him, the teachers love him and he just attracts people to him because of his personality.”

Haskins is set to play quarterback for the hometown Maryland after graduating from Bullis in June. The decision to stay home over offers from Florida, Duke, Michigan, Notre Dame, Auburn and many others provided a recruiting spark for the Terrapins.

After committing in May, the nation’s No. 2-ranked pocket passer in the class of 2016 became a key recruiter for Maryland. Being a trendsetter of sorts is something that Haskins Jr. is relishing.

“The movement is something that I’ve been working hard on,” Haskins said. “Getting kids from the area to stay home is something that the Maryland coaching staff preached to me during my recruitment. Since I’ve committed and started recruiting others, I have seen a difference in people and how they feel about Maryland. A lot of guys are more interested than ever, so that’s been great.”
