Under Armour jersey tour: DE K.J. Henry

Intersport

Five-star defensive end K.J. Henry was presented with an Under Armour All America jersey on Wednesday at West Forsyth High (Winston-Salem, N.C.).

“It means so much,” said Henry. “It’s hard to put it into words. Even though I’m a son of a football coach, football wasn’t my only focus growing up. I loved basketball. Early on as a kid, that’s when I turned on ESPNU and thought it was so cool to play in the game on ESPN.”

The No. 3-ranked defensive end in the Class of 2018 didn’t always know the level of prospect he would rise to be.

“At first, the media and scouts recognized my talents before I did,” Henry said. “Initially, my dad realized it. I didn’t realize it until I competed at the camps against older guy and I had success and started dominating.”

Henry’s recruitment is down to five schools – Georgia, Virginia Tech, Alabama, Clemson and South Carolina. He made an official visit to Athens, Georgia, last weekend, and is scheduled to be in Blacksburg, Virginia, Oct. 21 with a decision expected December 20.

Four questions with K.J. Henry:

What player are you looking forward to competing with or against in the Under Armour All-America Game?

Justin Fields. I’m definitely going to be talking some trash to him. I kind of hope he’s on the other team because after The Opening performance, he’s feeling himself a little bit. Which he should, he balled out, but I’m going to have to bring down to earth.

If you could start a team with any player in your class, who would it be and why?

I would have to say probably Xavier Thomas. Just knowing him, and being in this position to play with guys in these camps, he’s definitely showed me some stuff and has a great work ethic. I’ve learned from him, and we give each other feedback on some things and he is just a great kid. I don’t think he gets as much respect as he should, even though he does get some.

What is your earliest football memory?

This probably is the best one. It’s when my dad was coaching at Wake Forest and I was probably six or seven years old. I go into the locker room and it was birthday, and I guess the players found out of whatever and out of nowhere I get tossed into the dirty clothes basket and rolled around the locker room. I was fine with it until my dad walked in there and yelled at me, and then I started crying.

What number do your wear, and why?

I wear 5. It’s not a big deal, but there are five people in my family and that is who I’m trying to play for along with my name on the back. That is really the thought process behind it.
