Auburn quarterback commitment Joey Gatewood was presented with an Under Armour All America Game jersey on Monday at Bartram Trail High (Jacksonville, Fla.).
“It was cool,” said Gatewood. “I’ve been looking forward to this for a while. I never really realized that I could be this level of a prospect, but I was always hopeful. It meant a lot that my teammates got to share this moment with me.”
The 6-foot-5, 234-pound Gatewood has been committed to Auburn since December of 2015. While programs have continued to pursue the dual-threat prospect, the offensive scheme and relationships have kept him tight with the Tigers.
“I just felt that the Auburn offense fit me when I committed, said the No. 38 player in the ESPN 300. “I like the offense and staff, and am looking forward to the opportunity at Auburn.”
Four questions with Joey Gatewood:
What player are you looking forward to competing with or against in the Under Armour All-America Game?
There isn’t any specific player I’m looking forward to going up against. I just look forward to competing against the best.
If you could start a team with any player in your class, who would it be and why?
[ESPN 300 receiver] Justyn Ross because he has that speed and length. I just want him on my team as a wide receiver. I’m trying to get him to Auburn.
What is your earliest football memory?
Playing in second grade as a defensive end. I wasn’t the biggest guy. I was actually short and pudgy. I didn’t transition to quarterback until seventh grade. I was just happy to playing football back then.
What number do your wear, and why?
I wear 2. There isn’t really a real reason. It’s not just because of Cam [Newton]. I just fits me.
