Winston brings winning ways to Tampa Bay

In a move expected since the day they clinched the top pick, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers officially turned their team over to Jameis Winston.

Winston became the 21st quarterback in the common draft era to be selected No. 1 overall and the first by Tampa Bay since Vinny Testaverde in 1987. Of the previous 20 quarterbacks taken first overall, six won a Super Bowl (Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, Troy Aikman, John Elway, Jim Plunkett and Terry Bradshaw) and 12 made multiple Pro Bowls.

The Buccaneers can only hope for a fraction of that success after finishing with their lowest win total (two) since the 1986 season.

Quarterback has been a gaping hole for the Bucs. They have had multiple starting quarterbacks in each of the last two seasons and have not had a quarterback finish the season with a winning record since Josh Freeman in 2010, tied for the third-longest streak in the NFL (with a minimum of five starts in a season).

If there is one thing Winston knows how to do, it’s win. At Florida State, he won his first 26 starts -- the longest win streak to start a career in the 21st century -- and finished with a near-perfect 26-1 record. As a redshirt freshman, he became the sixth player since 1950 to win the Heisman, go undefeated and win the national title in the same season.

Winston’s accuracy within the pocket will be an asset for a Tampa Bay team that had the third-worst completion percentage (56.7 percent) in the NFL last season. Winston completed 66 percent of his passes in his career in a pro-style offense.

In Tampa Bay, Winston will be paired with wide receiver Mike Evans. As a rookie, Evans surpassed 1,000 receiving yards and led the league with 18 receptions on passes of 20 yards or longer. When Winston played with a similarly tall deep threat, Kelvin Benjamin, at Florida State in 2013, he completed almost 50 percent of his passes of 20-plus yards, including 54.5 percent of his passes when targeting Benjamin.

Below are a few more “need-to-know” stats about Winston going No. 1 overall:

• Winston became the first player in Florida State history to be drafted No. 1 overall. He is the third FSU QB selected in the first round in the last five seasons (EJ Manuel and Christian Ponder), marking the first time that three quarterbacks from the same school were picked in the first round in a five-year span.

• The Buccaneers have chosen four quarterbacks in the first round in their history (Doug Williams in 1978, Vinny Testaverde in 1987, Trent Dilfer in 1994, Josh Freeman in 2009). Only Dilfer had a winning record, although not with them.

• Winston snapped a two-year drought without a quarterback going No. 1 overall. It was the longest such span since 1994-97. The good news? The last four signal-callers to snap such a streak of at least two years without a quarterback going first are Peyton Manning, Drew Bledsoe, Vinny Testaverde and John Elway. Three of those four quarterbacks started a Super Bowl and all of them lasted at least 14 years in the NFL.

• Winston joins Earl Campbell (1978), Vinny Testaverde (1987) and Dan Wilkinson (1994) as the only No. 1 overall picks to be drafted by a team that hails from the same state where he played in college.

• The team picking first overall in each of the last three seasons has posted a winning record the following year. That’s good news for Buccaneers fans.
