Jason Day just can’t break his winning habit.

Day won for the fifth time this season and the fourth in his past six PGA TOUR starts with Sunday’s win at the BMW Championship.

With the win, Day will become the No. 1 ranked golfer in the World Golf Rankings.

The history

Day becomes the third Australian golfer to attain No. 1 status, joining Greg Norman and Adam Scott.

He joins Tiger Woods as the only players to win five PGA TOUR events in a season in the past 11 years (Woods did it five times).

Day becomes the third golfer to be ranked No. 1 in the past three weeks. It’s the first time there have been three No. 1s in three weeks since 1997 (Tiger Woods, Ernie Els and Greg Norman).

Day joined Jordan Spieth as the only players to win wire-to-wire this season. Spieth did so at The Masters.

How he won

Day won because he was great from the fairway, finishing with a tournament-best 11.8 strokes gained tee-to-green. His winning margin was six strokes over Daniel Berger.

Day ranks fifth-best on the tour in that stat this season. He leads the tour in birdie average (4.79) and ranks second in scoring average (69.16).

Looking ahead

Day, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson, Bubba Watson are the top five in the FedExCup standings going to the Tour Championship. Each would win $10M with a victory.
