Tuesday marked the 11th anniversary of the Boston Red Sox completing their comeback from a 3-0 deficit to beat the New York Yankees in Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS.

The Chicago Cubs now face the same situation after falling into a 3-0 hole against the New York Mets.

The 2004 Red Sox succeeded. Thirty-three other teams have tried to come back from three games down and failed.

Theo Epstein was the Red Sox's general manager in 2004, and he is the Cubs' president now. "Rumor has it, it's been done before," Epstein told postgame reporters on Tuesday about coming back from a 3-0 disadvantage.

He would know. With the Red Sox back then, Epstein had a manager in his first year with the team in Terry Francona. And now he has one in his first year with the Cubs in Joe Maddon. The Red Sox were dealing with the "Curse of the Bambino.” They hadn't won the World Series since 1918.

The 2004 Red Sox were 98-64 and finished second in the AL East.

The 2015 Cubs were 97-65 and finished third in the NL Central.

Each had to defeat a New York team when down 3-0

The Red Sox faced the Yankees in the ALCS. They won Games 4 and 5 at home, then Games 6 and 7 on the road.

The Cubs are down 3-0 to the Mets in the NLCS. They have to win Games 4 and 5 at home, then Games 6 and 7 on the road.

Additionally, the Red Sox had to get past their archrival in the Yankees to advance to the World Series. The Cubs defeated their archrival (the Cardinals) to advance to the NLCS.

Each team had to deal with a dominant closer

Yankees closer and all-time saves leader Mariano Rivera blew save chances in Games 4 and Game 5 of the ALCS.

Jeurys Familia enters Game 4 of the NLCS having allowed four runs in his last 38 innings pitched.

The Red Sox got a valuable contribution from a pinch runner. The Cubs have a player who could fill that role.

Dave Roberts had a key stolen base for the Red Sox in the ninth inning of Game 4, then scored the tying run.

Quintin Berry was 27-of-28 on steal attempts during the regular season; he is 5-of-5 in the postseason. He's on the Cubs' NLCS roster.
