Cousins comfortable at home, with short passes, against blitz

Geoff Burke/USA TODAY Sports

Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins keeps having these days that make you think he’s still got a chance to be a pretty good quarterback.

Cousins had another huge game at home in the Redskins’ 47-14 romp over the Saints. He was 20-of-25 for 324 yards and a career-high four touchdowns.

Entering the week, Cousins’ Total QBR at home was 67.8, which ranked ninth in the NFL. On the road, his Total QBR was 39.6, which ranked 26th in the league. (The 31 qualified quarterbacks average a nearly identical Total QBR at home as on the road- 59.7 to 60.0).

What made Cousins so good on Sunday?

He went to the short passing game, averaging 3.3 air yards per pass attempt. Cousins was 17-of-20 for 257 yards, with three touchdowns on throws five yards or fewer downfield.

Three of the touchdowns also came on play-action. He had two play-action passes result in touchdowns in his first eight games this season.

Cousins also handled the blitz well. He was 6-of-7 for 125 yards and two touchdowns against five or more pass rushers, the second-best completion percentage on such passes in his career.

Entering Sunday, Cousins had the third-best completion percentage in the league against the blitz (67.7 percent), but had thrown twice as many interceptions (6) as touchdowns (3).

Looking ahead

The Redskins are on the road against the Panthers next week. The Panthers entered the week allowing the second-lowest average Total QBR (41.9) and the lowest completion percentage (56.6 percent). Only two quarterbacks have had a Total QBR of 44 or better against them- Drew Brees and Russell Wilson.

Cousins has yet to string together two really good games in a row. Three previous times this season, he had a Total QBR of 70 or higher. His QBRs the games after were 39.7, 52.6 and 23.2.

Elias Sports Bureau: Did you know?

Cousins is the first Redskins quarterback ever to do all of these in the same game.

- Complete 80 percent of his passes

- Pass for 300 or more yards

- Throw at least four touchdowns

- Throw no interceptions

He’s the 13th in NFL history to hit all of those benchmarks.
