Royals bats silenced as ALCS returns to KC

TORONTO -- While the Toronto Blue Jays grabbed the victory Wednesday, the Kansas City Royals were clutching to the fact they now have the chance to close out the American League Championship Series at home.

After the Blue Jays’ 7-1 victory in Game 5, the series will head back to Kansas City for Game 6 on Friday.

While the attention-getting moment of Wednesday’s game was the Blue Jays’ four-run sixth inning that was fueled by just one hit, there was also the matter of the Royals’ handcuffed offense against Toronto starter Marco Estrada.

The Royals entered the game as just the fifth club in playoff history to record at least 15 hits in consecutive games. They had also scored at least five runs in six consecutive postseason games, one game off the record.

The Royals' only hit through seven innings was a single from leadoff man Alcides Escobar in the fourth. Lorenzo Cain saw his franchise-record 13-game postseason hit streak come to an end.

Thumbs up: The Royals continued to play outstanding defense in the defeat. Two impressive catches from Eric Hosmer and Ben Zobrist in the second inning prevented the Blue Jays from running away with the game even earlier than they did. Where the gloves couldn’t be of use was in the sixth inning when the Blue Jays worked three walks. Josh Donaldson was also hit by a pitch in the inning.

Thumbs down: Now that the ALCS is turning into the heavyweight fight that was expected, it is a shame the series will go dark for a day. The teams will head back to Kansas City, with Game 6 not taking place until Friday. The bonus is that both bullpens can get the break they need, meaning that both sides will be at full strength for an all-important game.

Up next: After an off day Thursday, the Royals will send Yordano Ventura to the mound in an effort to wrap up the ALCS in Game 6. Ventura gave up three runs on eight hits in just 5 1/3 innings of Game 2, but it was plenty once the offense finally got back on track. Ventura was helped by a stingy bullpen that gave up no runs and just two hits the rest of the way. Over 12 1/3 innings of the postseason this year, Ventura has a 6.57 ERA, second most to Johnny Cueto’s 7.88 mark.
