STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State star wide receiver Justin Blackmon won't play Saturday against Kansas State after his arrest on a misdemeanor DUI charge.
Coach Mike Gundy announced Blackmon's suspension Wednesday during a news conference after the Cowboys practiced. Blackmon also briefly addressed reporters, saying he "made a mistake" and takes "full responsibility" for it.
"I'm embarrassed to be in this position," Blackmon said. "I'm truly sorry to my family, to my friends and to Oklahoma State all together. I look forward to redeeming myself and proving to everybody that this isn't who I am. I'm not this guy. I'm humbled by this experience, and I will grow from it.
"I did it and I should be punished for it. I'm just going to take my punishment like I should."
Blackmon and three friends attended the Dallas Cowboys' game Monday night against the New York Giants. Gundy said he was not aware of the trip, and Blackmon didn't say he had permission to go. Monday was an off day from practice for Oklahoma State players, Gundy said.
"I just kind of up and went," Blackmon said.
Blackmon said he can't comment on where he got the tickets for the NFL game.
He said he apologized to his teammates and coaches "for being a distraction. I'm sorry I brought this on. ... I brought a lot of bad press to Oklahoma State, the school, and I'm really sorry for that."
Blackmon was arrested at 3:45 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 35E in Carrollton, Texas, after police used radar to determine he was driving 92 mph in a 60 mph zone. An officer performed a field sobriety test on the 20-year-old Blackmon. Under Texas law, a driver younger than 21 can be arrested for having any detectable amount of alcohol in his or her system, and police said Blackmon fell into that category.
Blackmon was bonded out of jail in Carrollton shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday for $375, police spokesman Dustin Bartram said. Because Blackmon is younger than 21, he must appear in Carrollton municipal court to address the charge. He could be fined up to $500 but faces no jail time.
Besides the game suspension, Gundy made Blackmon run on a stair-stepping machine during the Cowboys' practice Wednesday. Gundy said he made the decision to suspend Blackmon.
"It's unfortunate that this happened for him, because he really is a good person," Gundy said. "... I wouldn't have an issue with leaving him with my three sons. I'd let him baby-sit in a heartbeat. He's a very caring person who's made a mistake and he's going to suffer the consequences.
Blackmon, a 6-foot-1, 207-pound sophomore from Ardmore, has emerged as a surprise star this season for the Cowboys. He leads the Bowl Subdivision with 158.9 yards receiving per game. He has 62 catches for 1,112 yards and 14 touchdowns. His absence means quarterback Brandon Weeden will need to find a different favorite target when No. 20 Oklahoma State (6-1, 2-1 Big 12) plays at Kansas State (5-2, 2-2).
"I think he understands now that he's elevated himself to the level nationally that when he makes a mistake, everybody's going to know about it," Gundy said. "When he does something good and productive, which he does a lot, everybody is going to be aware of it. He needs to understand where he stands. That's the way it is, from this point on, would be my guess."
