Hazlewood went wide on the crease and slid the ball in, enticing the drive but there was just enough seam movement to shift the line and kiss the edge of the bat. Bairstow slopes off in the fifth over for a nine-ball duck 4/3

3.2 bowled 'im! Superb ball from Cummins and England are two down for spit! There's been some nip off this fresh surface and Cummins locates the perfect length, it jags back appreciably as Hales presses forwards, flicks the front pad before rattling the off pole 4/2

5.3 dug in, Root wafts at a pull, gets a big, ballooning top edge... and Hazlewood pockets the catch at fine leg! Root bags a duck and England are four down! Good pace and bounce, the bumper got too big for Root and he sent it right down the fielder's gullet. This could get ugly 6/4

21.3 short, down the leg side and Morgan has gloved through to the keeper! That would have been a wide had he let it go, but the pace drew him into a response, and a thin tickle does the rest! England's revival is dented by a familiar foe 61/6

6.2 zips off a length, grazes the outside edge! ENGLAND ARE 8 FOR 5!!! (Or 5 for 8, if you're that sort...) Brilliant ball from Hazlewood, not too much fault with the batsman here: perfect length, seaming a fraction as Buttler felt for it in defence, flicks the bat and Paine swallows another! 8/5

30.3 panned out to deep midwicket and picks out the fielder! A sharp double take as Head senses the rope behind him, tosses the ball back into play, and gathers at the second attempt 112/7

42.4 slower ball, slugged down the ground... and well taken by the fielder running in from long-on! Glenn Maxwell it is, on as a sub, and he's the sort of catcher you want under those. Woakes' impressive counterattack is ended, a wide legcutter from Tye does it and he picks up his second wicket 180/9

31.6 back of a length, a simple nibble outside off, and Cummins strikes again! 120/8

44.5 gone! Tye finishes it with the knuckle-ball, ending Curran's sally with a mistimed chip to midwicket. A cheeky thirty at a run a ball helping England to respectability, but almost certainly not enough 196/10

4.4 edged and gone! Perfect line and length, a hint of seam, Warner pushes with hard hands and Buttler does the rest! 25/1

34.2 oh no! Head has pulled to mid-on! Four runs short of a deserved century, he's failed to get on top of the bounce and sent a straightforward catch straight to Morgan. Head heads off with his head bowed in disappointment, but he can hold his, er, head high after guiding the chase 180/6

7.4 inswinger and that's plumb! Curling into the front pad, White attempts to play across the line but the ball beats him to it. Up goes the finger, and England are still brawling 48/2

13.5 back of a length, Smith slashes hard and that's a brilliant sharp take at slip! it was travelling quickly but Root watched that right off the blade, rode with the pace and swallowed the chance to his right to keep the pressure on Australia... 70/3

21.5 full toss - but he's flubbed it straight back to the bowler! Rashid shakes his head, acknowledging his luck; he did well to cling on, actually, as it was struck pretty hard. Marsh can't believe it but it's gifted England another opening 112/4

25.3 tossed up and slogged into the off side, taken! Stoinis completely undoes the good work of the previous two balls but hoicking an ugly top edge straight up, barely made it to the edge of the ring and Roy grabs it safely 136/5

36.1 full length, clipped down to long-on and there's a huge mix-up! How on earth did that happen? Cummins turned blind for the second, his partner was going nowhere, and rightly so, as the shy came in, Wood gathered and flicked off the bails, and ... well ... jitters! EDIT: There would have been two if Paine had pushed the first one ... he'll know he was at fault 185/7
