Rhodes, Hameed star in narrow win

Scorecard

England took a 1-0 lead in their Youth ODI series against South Africa with a narrow two-wicket win at Edgbaston. Captain Will Rhodes picked up five wickets before taking part in a 68-run opening stand with Haseeb Hameed, who went on to score 97 and anchor England's chase.

Kevin Dudgeon returned to remove Hameed with 35 runs required and completed his five-wicket haul two overs later, as England suffered a wobble late in the chase. Josh Shaw and Luke Wood were both run out before Rob Jones and Matthew Fisher completed victory with four balls to spare.

South Africa were dismissed with 11 balls left unbowled, as they slipped from 107 for 1 to 227 all out. After being put in to bat, Ryan Rickelton and Janneman Malan added 76 for the second wicket, the latter reaching a half-century before becoming Rhodes' first wicket. The rest of the middle order got in and then got out, as Fisher picked up two wickets and Rhodes, both of Yorkshire, finished with 5-48.

England lost 3 for 4 in their reply, all to Dudgeon, before Hameed combined with wicketkeeper Joe Clarke in a century stand for the fourth wicket.

After the two-Test series was drawn, England will host five one-day games, the second of which will take place at Trent Bridge on Sunday.
