England U-19s 305 for 5 (Alsop 107, Hameed 97, Rhodes 60) beat South Africa U-19s 216 (Malan 76, Shaw 4-47) by 74 runs (D/L method)
Scorecard
Tom Alsop smashed an 80-ball hundred as part of a strong England batting display before four wickets for Josh Shaw wrapped up a big win over South Africa. England could now claim the five-match series with victory in the third Youth ODI on Monday.
England's total was built around the contributions of their top three. Will Rhodes made 60 out of an opening stand of 112 with Haseeb Hameed, who scored 97 for the second match running; Alsop then blazed a century in their slipstream as England passed 300. Although South Africa's target was revised down to 291 after a shower, they did not look like getting close.
No. 3 Janneman Malan again top-scored for the tourists but, after he had been dismissed for 76, South Africa slipped to 136 for 5 and then 173 for 6. The last four wickets fell for 13 runs inside three overs, as Yorkshire seamer Shaw completed a four-wicket haul.
Rhodes, England's captain, also took two wickets after getting the innings off to a fluent start. Hameed was involved in consecutive century stands, putting on 155 for the second wicket before missing out on his own ton, and Joe Clarke gave the score a further kick by slapping 25 off 14 balls.
Trent Bridge is again the venue for the third match, before the teams move on to Leicester and Derby.
