9.1 caught at fine leg! It was short and pulled away, the fielder Lakmal was very close to the rope and he juggled it and caught it, judged it well in the end 35/1
11.4 caught at gully and Bangladesh have lost their third! Shamsur playing away from the body, Eranga pitched this one up and got it to move away, Shamsur went for the drive, big outside edge and Vithanage judges it well diving to his right at gully, clever change of length by Eranga who had peppered him with the short stuff before this 40/3
10.4 gone! Mathews has one now. He pitched this one on a length and got the ball to dart in markedly off the seam. Marshall brings his bat down but way down the wrong line. The ball strikes him around the knee roll on the front foot and the umpire raises his finger. That came in a long way, out of nowhere. 40/2
17.2 soft dismissal for Mominul! Lakmal bangs it in short, Mominul was hurried onto the pull, he didn't look in good position to play it, ended up miscuing the shot to short square leg where the fielder actually had to dive forward to take it, the ball dipped before reaching Vithanage 59/4
40.1 trapped on the sweep! Flighted on off and middle, Shakib was early on the sweep, the ball hits the base of the pad and adjacent to the stumps, easy decision, Bangladesh lose a wicket against the run of play 145/5
57.4 he's been given lbw but Rahim's a bit dazed, could have been an inside edge. To Lakmal's credit, the ball swung back in appreciably from outside off, Rahim was looking to play across the line, struck above the pad, seemed like two sounds and Nigel Llong was quite convinced though 203/7
41.4 snorter of a delivery. Dug in short by Eranga, and though Nasir gets into a position to play it, he bails and tries to evade the ball instead. The ball collects glove as it passes through and Eranga is pretty chuffed with that one 150/6
59.3 Gazi throws it away! Lakmal bowls it short from over the wicket, Gazi can't help but go for the pull, he ends up swatting it towards mid-on and mistimes it completely, a dolly for Eranga at mid-on 219/8
63.5 caught at gully! Good length outside the off stump and he looks to slash it away but finds Dilruwan Perera who quickly moves to his right at gully 232/10
60.5 through the gate, the arm ball gets Rubel, tossed up and Rubel looked to drive expecting it to turn away but he left a big gap between bat and pad and the ball hit the middle stump 222/9

37.2 punched off the back foot, but ends up hitting this a bit too well as this goes straight to silly mid-off, with Robiul completing a good catch to get a wicket against the run of play 118/1
91.5 and Silva's innings comes to an end as he is caught in front by a Shakib delivery which tails away leg side as this looks quite plumb. He goes finally for 139, ending a terrific knock from the young and promising opener 302/3
86.6 and finally Al-Amin is awarded for his tireless work as he succeeds in getting Sanga to edge one away to the slips, with Nasir at first slip juggling two times before holding on, splayed on the ground, to the third. Would have been heart-breaking for the bowler if that had grassed. Ends a sterling effort from the Sri Lankan No.3 273/2

107.1 and the man with the golden arm strikes as Shakib gets this to turn away as Chandimal plays well inside the line of it, with this one hitting the top of off stump 374/4
108.2 well that failed quickly. Gazi does the needful to prise out a late wicket as he tosses this one up, which Lakmal has a stab at, getting an outside edge which carries to first slip, who takes a good rolling catch 375/5
158.4 and Mathews will not be able to get that elusive hundred as he ends up giving a catch to short mid-on, who takes it low to dismiss the right-hander. Shows his frustrations by discarding his gloves in contempt after crossing the boundary rope 554/6

3.3 and Herath has struck for Sri Lanka as Tamim looks to hit this over midwicket, but instead gets a leading edge which spoons over to point, who takes a wonderful diving catch to hold onto it. A wicket quite early for Sri Lanka there, and Bangladeshi supporters will be wondering if they are still at the same ground they were sitting in just half an hour back 15/1
9.2 he gets a snorter second ball! Roughed up by extra bounce outside the off stump, Shamsur couldn't get his bat out of the way, too quick from Eranga, Chandimal takes it in front of his face, very similar to Nasir Hossain's dismissal 35/2
14.5 the short ball does the trick! Lakmal comes round the wicket and bangs it in short on the body, gives Ayub little option but to play to it, he tries to fend it off off the back foot and the ball lobs to Silva waiting at short leg, easy catch 50/3
31.1 and Mominul's spirited knock comes to a rather innocuous end as he is caught on the pads in front of leg stump. This one looked to be going on to clip the top of leg, with the umpire raising the slow finger of death. Bangladesh now five down and in a world of trouble as they stare down the possibility of a heavy, heavy defeat 133/5
23.5 raps him on the pads on middle and leg as Shakib looks to play this off the back foot, most likely towards mid-on, but ends up misreading the line as this one strikes him on the right pad, which is certainly in line of middle and leg. The umpire did not hesitate to give this one out straightaway, and Bangladesh are now four down, with still plenty left to do 102/4
35.3 and Perera bamboozles him with one which turns into him from outside off as Mushfiqur is tempted to go for the drive, but leaves a huge gap between bat and pad to find his leg stump pegged back. You had a feeling that a wicket was going to go down soon, but I wouldn't have pegged Mushfiqur 150/6
45.3 looks to force the issue with a hit down the ground, but ends up getting this off the bottom of the bat, with the ball spooning over to mid-off where Herath takes a safe catch to this steepler. Nasir Hossain gone for 29, and Bangladesh on their last legs 197/9
40.3 length ball which seems to rise a bit as this one strikes the front pad in line of middle and leg as the Sri Lankans go up for an appeal, and it is given by the umpire. Gazi's eventful cameo comes to an end, and Bangladesh just three away from defeat 183/7
44.3 low full toss on middle which strikes Robiul flush on the pads in line of the stumps as this one looked as good as gone, with the umpire not having to think too hard before giving this one out. Sri Lanka just two away from a massive, stupendous , enormous, gigantic innings victory 197/8
51.5 gets this one outside off as Al-Amin continues to look to be positive, but it appears his luck may have ran out as the ball catches an edge of the bat before Silva snaps on to it from behind 250/10

Match Notes

  • Batting collapses 'alarming', says Mushfiqur

Mushfiqur Rahim accepted responsibility for his role in Bangladesh's innings-and-248-run defeat to Sri Lanka, saying the missed chances and bad batting were the major reasons for the loss

  • Sri Lanka thrive as a collective

Many past Sri Lankan victories have been because of one or two great cricketers shining, but this had strong performances from virtually everyone in the side

  • SL inflict crushing innings and 248-run defeat

Sri Lanka recorded their second biggest ever Test win by an innings, wrapping up the first Test an hour after lunch on the fourth day with Bangladesh still 248 runs short of making the visitors bat again

  • Bangladesh err by picking three quicks

Bangladesh's decision to go in with an extra quick in place of Abdur Razzak has backfired badly

  • Sri Lanka commit to the grind

A maiden ton to Kithuruwan Vithanage at almost a-run-a-ball was the most telling personal contribution, as he joined the wave of young players suggesting Sri Lanka's future is more secure than previously imagined
