End of match: Comprehensive win for Australia. Outsmarted Sri Lanka in all departments, with a special mention for the fielding. Three run-outs, all specialist batsmen. Chandimal was the positive today for Sri Lanka, but had it not been for those run outs, this could have gotten closer. That's something SL need to address before their next match. Today was a communications disaster.

Richard : "Sorry. What was that about an Aussie B-side?"

It can't be too bad a team when you have the likes of Hughes, Khawaja and Finch in probably the form of his life. He didn't perform today but his time will come.

Phillip Hughes is the Man of the Match. We don't have coverage of the presentation.

Otherwise that's it from here. There's still the India-England ODI and the SA v NZ Test to keep you occupied. We're back for the second ODI at Adelaide in two days. Same time. Thanks for your company. Cheers!

McKay to BAW Mendis, OUT, it's all over, at the stroke of the 40th over! Catching practice for Haddin, Mendis gets a length ball which he presumably wants to dab to third man, only managed a thick edge, Haddin would have caught that with his eyes shut

McKay to Kulasekara, OUT, Bailey seems to be catching everything, very soft dismissal, short of a length, Kula shaped to smash that over mid-on, miscued and it lobs to Bailey

  • A fourth keeper could replace injured Chandimal

Sri Lanka may be forced to field their fourth wicketkeeper of the tour in the second ODI in Adelaide on Sunday, after Dinesh Chandimal hurt his hamstring during the loss to Australia in Melbourne

  • Hughes grabs his chance

After 802 matches and 199 players - not to mention his 20 Tests - Phillip Hughes became the first Australian to make an ODI ton on debut

  • A glut of debuts and run-outs

Plays of the Day from the first ODI between Australia and Sri Lanka, at the MCG

  • Hughes sets up huge Australia win

B-team, hey? An Australian outfit led by George Bailey and featuring three debutants did what sides captained by Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Shane Watson have not managed to do in the past three ODIs against Sri Lanka at the MCG: win

  • Australian experience invaluable for Sri Lanka's young

Sri Lanka have a number of young players in their squad keen to get an experience of Australian conditions before the 2015 World Cup
