Wakely and Smith shine before washout

England U-19s 239 for 8 (Smith 81, Wakely 57) v New Zealand U-19s - No result
Scorecard

The rain sweeping across the country took a little while to reach the south east, but once it did it spelt the end for the second ODI between England Under-19s and New Zealand Under-19s. England had reached 239 for 8 off 44 overs when the weather closed in and they maintain the 1-0 series lead secured with Saturday's victory.

Alex Wakely and Greg Smith were the mainstays of England's innings, but the other batsmen couldn't quite build on their efforts. Wakely began in sparkling style with 57 off 41 balls before being caught behind, then Smith took control with 81 off 90 deliveries.

However, New Zealand kept chipping away with Nick Beard producing a good spell of left-arm spin to claim 2 for 37. Bill Brown was unbeaten on 30 and trying to hold the lower order together when the rain arrived and ended the match.

The series resumes on Monday with the third match at Hove before back-to-back games and Northampton at the end of the week.
