5.20pm And that's the end of the game. Bangladesh needed another 146 runs off 15 overs and India needed eight wickets. It was a no-win situaton for either team and the captains have agreed to call it off.

Credit to Bangladsh. They came out today and took quick wickets as India pushed for runs. They they batted solidly, chasing 250 in 43 overs for victory, and finished on 104 for 2 in 28 overs. The Indians bowled poorly and never looked like troubling the batsmen at any stage.

The Man of the Match is Mashrafe Mortaza and deservedly so. He took four wickets in the first innings and it was his rearguard 79 that helped Bangladesh avoid the follow on and save this Test.

That's it from us at Cricinfo for the moment. Do join us on Friday for the second Test at Dhaka. Meanwhile do check out the third ODI between Pakistan and Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi which starts in a short while. Until then, this is George Binoy signing off. Cheers!

5.18pm If both captains agree the match can be called off now as we are about to start the final 15 overs that are mandatory.

  • Draw despite sporting declaration

Despite a sporting declaration by India, the first Test between Bangladesh and India at Chittagong petered into a tame draw

  • When more is less

"If we didn't play series now, when else could we have played it?" said Dav Whatmore, when questioned whether this series could have been scheduled at a better time

  • Bad cricket, best forgotten

India's intent was undermined by an inability to force the issue, Bangladesh showed they hadn't played Test cricket for 13 months

  • Mortaza stars as Test heads for draw

Mashrafe Mortaza played an innings that was as entertaining as it was invaluable as Bangladesh averted the follow-on, and potential disaster, after their top-order had made a mess of things

  • Drifting away

How India let slip a chance to enforce the follow-on merely illustrated the unhealthy dependence on Kumble to snip tails
