  • Ramesh Mendis31-5-64-4

2.22pm That's all we have from this Test, a day five finish after a couple of collapses, some rain, and a lot of wickets to spin. Do join us again in four days from now for the second Test, at the same venue. And if you're hungry for more Test cricket, hop over to India vs New Zealand going on in Kanpur. For now, it's goodbye from us, this is Vishal Dikshit signing off.

KGG: "It's a shame that Ramesh Mendis couldn't get his maiden five wicket haul. How cruel the fortune is as he made the havoc for WI batters, but couldn't take a single wicket of a tailender. The expression when Nissanka dropped Joshua's catch showed how he dreamt of a five-fer. "

We have the presentation finally...

Karunaratne is also the Player of the Match: Great Test for me after very long I was playing Test cricket. It's a good game, none of us played a four-day game after the last Test (in April) so it was a job well done. Our youngsters are getting the experience and we needed someone like Angelo Mathews and Chandimal for these conditions, and our young spinners have done a good job, even our fast bowlers. We didn't know how the wicket was going to behave because it had been raining for the last few months but we have some idea now and we'll decide the playing XI for the second game later. When you play well, you need to carry on. I've been working hard for the last few years and I have some targets to achieve, so I'm working towards those.

Brathwaite: I thought Joshua and Bonner, the way they fought from yesterday evening, was tremendous. I always believe first innings total is important, and then build pressure. Sri Lanka skipper played well. It was important for us to get close to their score. (Toss is) crucial but at the end of the day you've to to play good cricket. Gabriel getting two wickets, Roston getting five, we were decent, they batted well but our batting let us down.

It is, by the way, raining heavily in Galle now. Started only about five minutes after the last wicket, and that might be delaying the presentation.

1.48pm Embuldeniya takes his fourth five-for in Tests and it was Mendis who wrecked the batting order much more, starting with the big wicket of Brathwaite. Sri Lanka didn't even use Lakmal this innings, because they knew their spinners would be enough, and they'll be happy that's how it turned out to be because rain was always around the corner here. There was, in fact, a lot of rain forecast for days four and five, and Sri Lanka are lucky that somehow changed. West Indies, not so lucky, and their batting also has a lot of work to do, especially their top five-six because they can't rely on Holder, Joshua and Cornwall to rescue them all the time. Not surprisingly, they lost 19 of their 20 wickets to spinners, but they can't be doing it without scoring much. 100 for 6 in the first innings and 18 for 6 in the second is what they have to work on.

Moiz: "This win would be dedicated to Mickey Arthur. He has done a fantabulous job in grooming youngsters and giving them proper chances. Sad that he will be leaving Sri Lanka after this series."

Ahnaf Adnan Kha: "Feel Sad for Bonner."

1.42pm Celebrations all around for Sri Lanka, the band comes on, handshakes all around in the dressing room and a big smile on Mickey Arthur's face who comes down the stairs. A win by 187 runs then, even though it got delayed by a wonderful fight back from Joshua Da Silva, Bonner and Cornwall (who also threw his wicket away). Bonner remains unbeaten on 68 and what an innings it has been for him. West Indies have had batting issues in recent times, but this innings will give their top four some confidence.

Embuldeniya to Gabriel, OUT, edged and taken at slip, Sri Lanka wrap up the big win! Mendis remains on four and Embuldeniya takes five. Pitched it shorter on off, Gabriel went back to defend and the ball turned to take a thick outside edge to slip
