6.04pm Phew, quite the Boxing Day we've had. The early punches were all thrown by Australia, particularly by the 19-year-old Sam Konstas who rode his early luck and made one of the more memorable debut half-centuries you'll ever see, peppered with audacious scoops, reverse-scoops and dashes down the track against the quicks. Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith built on his early work, and put Australia in a commanding position at 237 for 2, but India hit back thereafter, with who else but Jasprit Bumrah leading the way. Australia lost 4 for 74 towards the end of the day, and that brings the Test match back towards something like parity, but at 311 runs on day one, on a pitch where the ball is beginning to go up and down, you would think the home team are a little better placed.
Prasanna S: "Whose day it is? Would say 55 - 45 in favor of Australia. Could have been way worse for India if not for Bumrah's final session spell. Amazing how he singlehandedly keeps India in the contest."
Pranay: "Akash is playing in place of Shami so of course he is going to carry his luck in some matches. "
Sam L: "Bumrah worked hard today. He was unlucky early. Could have had 5-for today"
Here's Alex Malcolm's piece on the story of the day: Sam Konstas' debut scooping. There's also a stack more cricket to come today with the BBL and two more Boxing Day Tests: South Africa vs Pakistan and Zimbabwe vs Afghanistan. And we'll be back tomorrow for more. For now, from Karthik and Gnasher, it's goodbye.
This will be the last over of the day. The official attendance flashes on the big screen: 87,242.

Backward short leg in place.
Krishna Swaroop: "Excellent from Akashdeep. Persistent despite no luck. He is made for test cricket. Brave call to retain him over Harshit Rana - who was being favoured by quite a few experts. I thought Akashdeep just brought in more discipline. some of the credit to this wicket should also go to NKR for keeping it tight before the new ball. Great cricket all around."
Wajid Jawaid : "I think Australia have already got enough for a 70 plus runs first innings lead. They are in a good position here." -- Yeah, I think their tall quicks can exploit the inconsistent bounce a little more frequently than India have managed.
