Uwaisul Karnain: "Kamindu Mendis has set a new world record for the most consecutive half-centuries in Test matches since debut, surpassing Saud Shakeel."
5.23pm More than Chandimal's 116, Mathews' unbeaten 78, and Kamindu's world-record fifty in an eighth consecutive Test since debut, the day might be remembered for New Zealand's missed and/or dropped chances. Mitchell put two catches down, Latham one difficult one, Blundell missed a stumping, O'Rourke dismissed Mathews off a no-ball, and the ball fell just short of the New Zealand fielders on more than one occasion. But don't forget how Chandimal, Mathews, Kamindu (51*) and Karunaratne (46) capitalised, and made New Zealand sweat while taking Sri Lanka past 300 on day one. Who knows what might have been had all those chances gone to hand? That is exactly what New Zealand will ponder tonight, as we shut shop for the day. See you tomorrow! Until then, take care!
