6.1 another shot in anger, another one goes! That's a really poor shot, so soon after the wicket. It was a gullible outswinger, very full, swinging out of the hand, begging to be driven, but Madushka's footwork couldn't match his ambitions. A simple snick straight into Root's breadbasket at first slip, who clings on in the heel of his palms. This is going south very rapidly all of a sudden 6/2
5.3 Oops, take that back! Karunaratne's first shot in anger is a swishing pull through a sharp short ball from Aktinson! It wasn't especially short but it climbed sharply, and nipped away just a fraction too. The thinnest of top-edges, Smith hops to gather, and the solidity of that early strokeplay is undone! 6/1
15.1 Wood gets his first with an absolute corker! Rears up from a back of a length, 93mph, and Mendis can do a little about it, except just fend it away. Ends up catching him on the right thumb before looping to second slip for a simple take 40/4
6.6 No stroke offered, up goes the finger! Oh my, a terrible misjudgement, or is it? Mathews reviews, maybe hoping it was going over the top. He certainly must have been leaving on length as that was too tight to off stump initially... angled in initially, nipping back further, clipping the top of the bails! Disaster for Sri Lanka, the ball is talking now too as the lacquer comes off the ball. Buckle up! 6/3
22.3 Chandimal done in by a daisy cutter! One had kept low in the previous over, but this one barely got off the ground! It was back of a length, pitching outside off and turning back in. But it kept so low that Chandimal was struck near his ankle! Chandimal reviews probably in disbelief more than anything else, but it's three reds and he must go. With less than 10 minutes to lunch Sri Lanka have lost their fifth 72/5
50.2 The trap pays off! This was pushed through quicker than the last one, it's sliding down leg. But DDS has just moved back and clipped this straight into the pouch of leg slip. DDS falls for a very well made 74 as Old Trafford applauds 176/8
28.6 Round the wicket, maybe it was a sucker set-up after all! A change of angle immediately after being cuffed through the covers, Kamindu was committed to the ball outside his eyeline, but this was angling back into his stumps, and a thin snick deflects through to the keeper! 92/6
33.6 nicked off on the fuller length! Justice is served for Atkinson, who had Jayasuriya in all sorts of bother in this over. It's another sucker-punch for Sri Lanka, the surprise fuller length catches him with his weight stuck on the back foot, no commitment to the drive through the line, a thin but audible nick to the keeper! 113/7
70.4 holes out to mid-on this time! Woakes is in the game this time, stretching high to claw down the looping drive, Pope kept tempting him to go over the top, and gets the reward to end a wonderful debut innings! 226/9
73.6 And is that it? Think it very well might be! This was worked to midwicket off the front foot and Vishwa sets off immediately for an, admittedly, tight single. Asitha turns him back but he's already halfway down the track. Vishwa puts in the dive, but he's well short. Sri Lanka are bowled out for 236 236/10

6.3 full inswinger, traps Duckett in front... not given this time! No about doubt height but was it doing too much? Dhananjaya revews Reiffel's call, so we will soon find out. Pitching on leg stump and then zinging down the line, three reds on ball-tracking! Two reviews in three balls and finally Sri Lanka have the opening wicket. Asitha rewarded for pitching it up, Duckett gone cheaply swinging across the line 30/1
14.3 teasing line, nicked behind! Lawrence is drawn into an indecisive fiddle outside off and there's a loud noise through to the diving Chandimal! The change of ends works a treat for Vishwa and Sri Lanka have their third of the morning afternoon. Lawrence's first knock at opener ends up as a middling one 67/3
8.4 BOOM - straight through him! That's a beauty from Asitha, who is right on it here. Kay-ohs the top of off stump, England's captain castled in the most emphatic manner! Perfect length and then it nips back just enough to leave Pope in a right two and eight. Lovely fast bowling 40/2
25.3 climbs into the drive, nicked off the inside-edge! Root sized up the wide line, played for the reverse, but played too far outside the initial line, as the ball stayed true! It's a fat low snick, well scooped up inches from the turf by Chandimal. Vital breakthrough! 125/4

39.1 ripper off the deck! That's come from nowhere, and it's unplayable! Brook is turned inside-out by one that dips on middle and leg, turns, bounces and clips the top of off! It's the first ball that's really turned all day, and the second that's misbehaved after the grubber to Chandimal. And what a time for a breakthrough! 187/5
79.4 And Smith's excellent essay comes to a close Nowhere near as good as Jayasuriya's earlier wicket-taking deliveries but they all count. This was a wide length, and Smith has just got a toe-end edge on the cut. Well taken behind the stumps as well. Smith walks off to well-earned standing ovation 315/8
57.3 Jayasuriya lands another absolute peach! He's only spun a couple today, but they've both rattled the top of off stump! Woakes looks almost as baffled as Brook, though this was perhaps tossed up a smidge more and he paid for playing back. Once again, Jayasuriya ragged it from middle to hit off stump. He celebrates by furrowing his brow even deeper than usual. That will perk up the tourists 239/6
76.5 has this been tickled down the leg side? Sri Lanka think so, but Paul Reiffel isn't sure it carried, so sends it upstairs. Looks like it goes pretty cleanly into Chandimal's gloves, low down to his left, and UltraEdge confirms the nick. So this is going to be... OUT! A maiden Test wicket for Milan Rathnayake, and SL finally break the seventh-wicket stand 305/7
85.3 And that is that! It was a short one and Potts goes after it, but only manages to find the man at deep square leg, who dives forward to complete the catch. England are bowled out for 358, and lead by 122 runs 358/10

82.6 And Wood's timber is disturbed! Asitha pleased to see the back of him as well. This was a good length and homing in on the top of off. Wood backed away one time too many, but this time fails to get any bat on it 348/9

0.3 Done in with one that nips back in! Oh dear, Madushka will not want to see that one back at all. He's just stepped forward and shouldered arms, but the angle is such that it's scooted past the front pad and clipped the top of off. Ouch 0/1
13.1 back of a length, jabbed to slip! Wood strikes immediately! Wood celebrates, then looks around to confirm it's been given... Paul Reiffel does belatedly raise the finger, then Karunaratne has a chat with Mathews before trudging off. Think it came off the inside edge on to the body, then straight to Brook at second. England were absolutely certain, even if the rest of us were unsure. SL's recovery checked 52/3
1.4 Scrambled seam does it again! This is fullish outside off, nipping in. Mendis is stuck on the crease pressing forward. He looks to play inside the line but the movement is just enough to catch the outside edge. Well taken low to his right by Smith as well, who can do no wrong this morning 1/2
50.4 And Mathews' luck runs out! This one was pushed up fuller and straight. It pitches and seams away just a touch, but it's enough to catch Mathews' leading edge as he looks to work this through midwicket. The ball loops up to the man at point, who dives forward to hold on 173/5
89.3 spooned to the sub fielder at deep cover! Fullish outside off, Chandimal looks to launch him back down the ground but can only slice it out into the off side. Harry Singh settles underneath it, and gets himself into a Test match scorebook... England need 205 to win 326/10
25.3 Keeps low and another one bites the dust! England's ploy of peppering that back of a length region has paid off. This has nipped in and caught DDS in the crease. He was winding up for the pull and expecting it to bounce much higher, ends up rapping him just above the knee roll. He reviews more out of utter disgruntlement than any real hope and he swiftly receives the bad news of three reds 95/4
85.2 edged low to Root at slip! The change of angle works a treat... scrambled seam from around the wicket, angling into the off-stump channel then nipping away off the seam. Slightly tired shot from Kamindu, the ball taking his outside edge as he stabs at it. Skews away low to Root, who scoops it up and claims a good catch 307/7
55.4 And Root has struck! This was just floated up around off, looking to bait Rathnayake into this exact sort of shot as he looks to clobber this down the ground. Ends up slicing it straight up as mid-off settles under it for any easy take. No repeat heroics for the debutant 190/6
87.6 slashed to second slip, taken at the second attempt! Sri Lanka have lost two in quick succession. Fullish, a hint of width outside off stump. Jayasuriya went chasing after it and his thick outside edge flew to Brook in the cordon. He fluffed his first attempt, parrying the ball up, but reacted calmly to grab the second chance 321/8
88.6 smashed on the knee roll, stone dead! Two reviews left so Vishwa might as well send it upstairs, and does. Looked very out... no inside edge as he prodded forward in defence. Hawk-Eye has it hitting leg stump, three-quarters of the way up, and England have their ninth 322/9

5.4 nicked off this time! Duckett plays for the inswinger but it holds its line and takes his outside edge. Tumbling catch by Mendis to his left, nothing contentious this time on the take, and Duckett has to go! 34/1
15.3 Trapped in front! But Lawrence reviews straight away. This was on the border of a good length and nipped back in from outside off. It's rapped Lawrence above the knee roll on the back pad, only height saving him here. And it's umpire's call on height, England don't lose a review but they lose another wicket 70/3
12.5 And the tactic has worked! Pope goes for the reverse from a leg stump line once more, but this time it's just popped up off the cue-end of the bat straight to slip 56/2

34.6 chipped back to the bowler, a wicket out of nowhere! It's been sent upstairs to check if it's a clean catch, Root telling Brook to hang on for a moment. Around the wicket, drifting in. Just a little uppish from Brook, caught in two minds between defence and rotation. Jayasuriya does very well off his own bowling, tumbling away to his left and getting his hand underneath it. Big moment! 119/4
50.4 Smith's cameo is brought to a close by an Asitha special! Bit of shape in - some reverse maybe - and finds the yorker, Smith plays all around it as middle and off go their separate ways. Surely this is too little, too late? 183/5
