39.1 finds the edge, and safely pouched! Breakthrough for England! Anderson has something approaching a smile on his face as he goes to celebrate with his team-mates. He'd gone back over the wicket and finally gets one straight enough to draw a stroke, couple with enough sideways movement to draw the edge. Harris looked to be grinding it out again, but he's gone, Root snaffling the chance at first slip. Got a bit squared up and the hands just followed the ball 111/2

40.2 gottim, Wood nicks off Laboosh! There's a scream on the stump mic but this time it's not Marnus. Delight for Mark Wood, he gets Australia's limpet-like No. 3 for the second Test in a row. Back of a length, rising in the channel, Labuschagne just has a dabble... and a healthy edge zips through to Buttler 117/3

83.6 nicks him off! Broad strikes with the second new ball and Smith is on his way back. On a good length, angling into the right-hander, and it leaves Smith, moving away appreciably off the seam. This time, it kisses the outside edge of Smith's bat as he fends away from his body, and Buttler gobbles up the catch diving to his right 232/4

131.5 bowled 'im, Broad has five! Pitched up, a little legcutter, I think, and it comes back enough to take the inside edge as Khawaja drives and redirects the ball into his timbers! Fabulous innings from Khawaja, and he acknowledges the applause as he heads off to put his feet up (for a few minutes, at least). Good stuff from Broad, too - he holds up the ball for his eighth Ashes five-for, and second in Oz 398/8

87.4 pouched at third slip! Broad gets another with the new ball and Green's lean series continues. Fullish, wide enough outside off stump that Green could have left it alone, but he prodded forward to drive. A thick outside edge flew into the cordon, and Crawley took a sharp low chance. Dodgy celebration from Broad, some kind of TikTok dance I think... 242/5

102.3 ugh, Carey has a hack and skies to mid-on! Of course twin spin was the way to go... Tossed up wide of the off stump and he tries to fetch it, only to skew a big top edge into the leg side. Bairstow had to get his skates on, turning and running from midwicket to hold a steepler over his left shoulder. Seemed like a big puff of dust went up where the ball landed. Australia won't mind seeing that, but it's another timely breakthrough for England 285/6

113.5 gloved behind! Or is it? Umpire Tucker says no, but England review. Vicious, climbing short ball, and Cummins fends at it as it gets big on him. Looks to have brushed something on its way through, but what? No Hot-Spot available... Snicko shows a spike as it passes the glove - or perhaps just after, but in the same frame, according to the TV umpire. Might even have hit the top of the grip on his bat, but there's enough evidence for Paul Wilson to tell Rod Tucker that he has to overturn his on-field decision. 331/7

9.2 cleaned up! Starc strikes eventually, no escape this time *waits for front-foot replay*... Pow, right in the kisser of middle stump! Hameed was looking to drive but left a big gap as the ball curled back in to rearrange his woodwork. England's openers fail to get past their previous best of the series (although 22 is still relative riches) 22/1

16.6 cleans him up! Boland has 1 for 0 and his Test bowling average keeps getting lower. Perfect nip-backer, pitching outside off stump then jagging back off the seam to burst through Crawley's attempted straight drive and peg back the top of his off stump. High-quality seam bowling from Boland, and Australia have their second 36/2

21.5 caught at leg slip! What a spell this has been from Australia's change bowlers! Everything Pat Cummins touches turns to wickets. Green strays onto the hip, finding extra bounce from a good length once again, and Malan looks to tickle one down to fine leg. But Khawaja is in tight at leg slip, and gobbles up the chance. This has been an astonishing half-hour, and England are disintegrating once again 36/4

20.1 slashed to second slip, Boland has another! Root can't help himself, suckered into the shot after so many dot balls in a row. Shorter and wider outside off stump. His eyes lit up at a hint of width and his attempted back-foot punch flies to Smith, who clings onto a sharp chance above his head, tumbling back 36/3

50.6 gottim! Pinned in front! Stone dead and Australia have the breakthrough. Done for pace, maybe expecting it to turn, but the ball scuttles on and raps the pads adjacent to middle stump. Up goes the finger, and Stokes doesn't tarry to wonder about a review, turns to head for the dressing room (and presumably another slug on the painkillers) 164/5

77.5 feathers an edge through to Carey! There was a gap at point, and Bairstow has a poke outside his off stump with an open face, looking to nudge a length ball away for one to get on strike at the start of the 79th. But it nibbles away just enough to deceive him, taking the outside edge of his bat to leave Carey with a straightforward catch 289/9

53.3 Cummins strikes, a tame push to short extra! Buttler gets his first duck of the calendar year and walks off stony-faced. Not quite sure what did for him there, the ball was full and he reached out for the drive, maybe it just stopped in the surface - the ball popped off the face and went low but straight to Khawaja close in 173/6

65.3 banged in short, skewed to point... but what did it hit? Given not out on-field, but Cummins opts to review. Wood calls for the physio and is getting a concussion test, and it looks like it's pinged him on the lid... hang on, Snicko suggests a flick off the glove on its way through! 72.5 miscues a slog-sweep straight to mid-on! That's a pretty poor shot from Leach. Just needed to tick over in support of Bairstow, but lined Lyon up and thought he'd whack him over midwicket. Lyon's extra bounce ensured a top edge, and Cummins barely had to move. 266/8

79.1 banged in, Broad takes on the three men in the deep... but his top-edged pull is so high that Carey can run round towards the vacant square leg region and settle comfortably underneath it. England fall short of 300, yet again! 294/10

18.1 big drive, nicked to the keeper - Leach strikes! Another half-formed knock that hasn't really gone anywhere from Harris, and England have a second almost out of nothing. Tossed up very full and wide, he was reaching a long away from his body looking to drive, and Pope did very well to follow the edge and cling on low down 52/2

5.6 nicks him off! 91mph/146kph, angled across him, and Warner edges through to Pope. Playing away from his body, feet rooted to the crease, and Wood strikes in his first over 12/1

21.4 springy bounce from a good length, wide outside off stump, and Marnus feathers behind! Looking to slash him away off the back foot, jumping back, but flashes an edge to Pope, who takes his third catch. Extra bounce from Wood, up at around 88mph/143kph. Labuschagne smashes bat with pad as he trudges off after falling to Wood for the third innings in a row 68/3

28.6 skids on, Leach cleans Smith up! Fullish length, Smith hangs back looking to punch a single away through the off side, but there's no turn whatsoever and it slides on with the angle, crashing into middle and off. Leach punches the air in celebration. He has two, England have four 86/4

68.4 slogged straight up, and Root pouches it! Green won't be getting a maiden Test hundred today, but he's found some form in fine style after a difficult series with the bat. Third wicket for Leach, tossed up on leg stump and he gets enough bounce to find the top-edge with Green mowing across the line 265/5

68.5 angled in straight, Carey is hit on the front pad sweeping... Leach appeals for lbw, the ball ends up with Pope, who then claims the catch. Given! And then the declaration comes! Carey a little unlucky, he ended up diverting the ball straight off the back of the bat as it swung through, and Pope stuck out a hand to grab it smartly. Fourth catch for England's substitute keeper, equalling the record. But it's all about what England can do with the bat now 265/6

32.6 slips in the yorker and Crawley is struck on the boot - given! Was it outside the line? Crawley eventually decides to review, which suggests he didn't hit it. The ball actually went under the bat, then clipped the front foot, bang in line with off stump. And that's a bingo! Fine innings from Crawley but once again Australia have all the aces, as Green breaks through 96/3

19.2 nicked off, Carey gobbles it up this time! You can't keep Boland out of the game for long and Hameed's miserable series continues. On a good length, just a hint of extra bounce and Hameed is, yet again, caught on the crease. He gets a healthy outside edge, which dips significantly on its way through to Carey due to his soft hands, but it's an easier chance than the last one and he takes it cleanly, two-handed rather than one this time 46/1

27.5 pegs back off stump! Goes wider on the crease on release, pitches on a good length. Keeps a touch lower than expected, skidding through to hit his off stump as Malan looks to chop it away through the off side. Australia have their second! 74/2

58.1 draws him out and kisses the edge! Root's gone! Boland and his golden arm does the trick for Australia one again. Just a thin nick, but everyone out in the middle could hear it. Precision engineering in the corridor outside off once again, Root felt he had to play. Lingers for a few seconds, holding the pose on the front foot - but he's got to go 156/4

74.4 steered to slip, Stokes is furious with himself! Huge overspin from Lyon from a good length, plenty of bounce and lots of turn off the straight. Stokes was caught in two minds, unsure whether to play or leave, and only managed to hang back and deflect it into the grateful hands of Steven Smith at slip, who took a sharp low catch. Stokes wound up to thump his bat into his pad, but eventually thought better of it. But he's clearly distraught after fighting so hard despite his thigh strain 193/5

91.2 edged into the front pad and snaffled at silly mid-off! Boland does it again - yet again - and Laboosh genuinely has something to shout about after swooping on the catch! Australia cavort as the finger goes up and Bairstow troops back to the changing rooms. Just two away now 237/8

84.4 full, swinging in sharply, pinned on the pad... Reiffel shakes his head! But Australia review. Was this pad first, or an inside edge? Hit Buttler on the knee roll on the back pad, right in front of middle-and-leg. Nothing on HotSpot on the inside edge. Buttler hits his boot with his bat, causing a noise on Snicko, but there's no sound as the ball passes the bat. It's hit him in line and is crashing into middle-and-leg halfway up! 218/6

84.6 nailed on the boot by a hooping, inswinger yorker, Cummins has two in three balls! Wood has little choice but to review but this looked stone dead to the naked eye. Nowhere near the bat, smashed him on the toe, and it's crashing into the base of leg stump, according to ball-tracking. Reiffel's decision is upheld and Cummins has cracked the game open! 218/7

99.6 finds the outside edge, and Leach is gone! Steven Smith breaks through with two overs left! Tossed up like a grenade into the footmarks, but it actually goes pretty much straight on to kiss the outside edge, with Leach playing for turn - loops straight into the waiting hands of Warner, despite a small deflection off Carey's gloves!
