It was a fantastic effort at backward square, the ball popped loose but he then got some body under it as he slid along the grass, ended up cupping it in the crook of his elbow. Root isn't going anywhere yet, though. This is going up to Marais Erasmus, who takes a couple of looks, and then gives it out! The main question was actually whether Smith grounded it as he attempted to get fingers under the ball. Very similar, in fact, to the Cameron Green catch in the WTC final, and Root has to depart! Khawaja hadn't been entirely comfortable with this line of attack and he won't be getting on the honours board despite another doughty knock. 24.1 struck on the pads by one nipping in, given! Warner reviews straight away. Will be tight unless he's hit it... which he hasn't. And ball-tracking has it demolishing leg stump! Maybe bluffed a touch by the short-ball field, Warner finally gets one with his name on it. Tongue has bowled well, and he's now removed Warner in both innings 63/1

Tongue bounces out Smith, again the ball getting bigger than expected but he still took it on, lollipopping a simple catch to one of the men stationed out there 190/4

67.3 bumped out! Root scoops it up at short leg! Broad knocks off Head with the short ball, and England are scrapping again. Superbly directed, right into the armpit and Head can only fend it away, the ball looping at a nice height to the left of Root as he springs across to take the catch one-handed 197/5

87.3 holes out to deep square! Green succumbs! He has been resisting for so long. Chest high short ball, he tried to hit it for six and didn't get it, he picks out Duckett 10 metres in from the rope. England's plan works 239/6

Having battled it out for 73 balls, this time the hands come up instinctively in front of the shoulder and the ball pops up off the top hand. 95.2 got him this time, popped to gully! Cummins has been ducking and weaving but finally ends up in the crosshairs. He's off his feet at the ball jams into the shoulder of the bat and loops up for an easy take behind square 261/8

Back of a length, fifth stump, Root tried to play his trademark push to point with an open bat face but this reared up sharply and he jumped with it and could only edge it to first slip from infront of his face. Lord's will rise again, but with a sense of trepidation as another Stokes epic comes to a quiet end. Boos around the ground as Bairstow stalks back to the dressing room. He wasn't attempting to take a run, but the ball wasn't dead either - at least as far as the umpires are concerned, which is the key factor 193/6

74.2 short and nasty, hoicked to fine leg! Broad backs away and swings blindly, but the top edge flies into the grateful mitts of Cameron Green plunging forward to hold it safely in the deep.
