14.1 nicked off on the full length! Warner throws his head back and starts walking before the ball has even reached Bairstow's gloves! Pushed across the left-hander's bows, he met it with a hard-handed drive, but the ball just just outside his eyeline at the point of impact. It was a solid start but he's gone now, and England strike almost immediately after the delay! 61/2
4.6 pitched up, pinned on the back leg! Joel Wilson thinks about it, thinks about it... and raises the finger! But Khawaja is going to review after a chat with Warner. Superb line from Broad, similar to the third ball of the over but this is fuller. Nips and beats the bat off the deck, hitting just above the knee roll... and ball-tracking has it smashing into middle! Test wicket No. 599 for Stuart Broad, and England are up and running 15/1

46.1 tossed up, there's some turn and it beats the flick to hit the front pad. Marnus shakes his head, as does Joel Wilson... but England review. The angles are against the offspinner, but this could be close, striking him just in line - and hitting the top of leg! The crowd erupts as the DRS comes back in England's favour, Labuschagne sinking to his knees in frustration. He's basically missed a straight one. Moeen gets Marnus for the second week running 183/4

29.2 huge appeal and I tell you, this looks close! No movement from umpire Nitin Menon, but Smith walked across his stumps and this time got his lines all wrong. The chat from the fielders is "it's not going over..." England review and no wonder! Three reds on DRS, and the surprise straight one does the trick. Smith negotiated that tactic with ease against Woakes, but Wood's 92mph just reached him that much quicker! 120/3
49.5 hooked and taken, Head's gone! And Broad has 600! Who would have picked the short ball and leg theory as the manner to get him there? Either way, he charges off in celebration, becoming only the fifth man to the mark in Tests. Head accepted the challenge but couldn't keep his shot down, Root stooping to take a good, low catch as he charged in off the rope. What a moment in the day 189/5
62.5 Oh my, Bairstow grabs a SCREAMER! Jaffa from Woakes, finds the edge but also wrong-foots YJB, only for the keeper to fling out his right mitt and cling on at full stretch! He roars in celebration, as he lies on his back and the crowd goes bananas. Marsh has played a gem of a knock but Woakes has got him for the third innings in succession. Two in the over and England are suddenly back on top again 255/7

62.1 skidding on straight, hit on the knee roll - given! Green will review Joel Wilson's decision but he doesn't look too confident. Only has to be clipping, and it is! A real margin call, as Hawk-Eye has it kissing the leg bail, but that is enough to see off Green and give Woakes his second wicket of the day 254/6
80.4 is there a flick on that? There is! The Wizard strikes again, much as he did at Headingley in fact, an attempted leave across his bows outside off, but the extra bounce from Woakes' buzzsaw seam position leaps into his raised blade, runs off the inside-edge, and through to Bairstow! 294/8

83.1 gone first ball! Cummins drives straight to cover point! Anderson finally has a wicket, in what could well be his last Test on his home ground, and Australia's captain is immediately heading back to the sheds. Not a lab-developed wicket-taking delivery, just a gentle half-volley that Cummins drove without timing, Stokes stooping for a low catch 299/9
90.2 gottim! Woakes celebrates with a hint of relief, he has to have a quick look at the umpire - but this one's okay. Straightening from back of a length outside off and Hazlewood sends a thick outside edge towards third slip, well held above his head by Duckett. Woakes has his first five-for against Australia, he holds the ball aloft as England head from the field 317/10

56.5 Crawley chops on! A wicket from nowhere... No double-ton but Crawley has lit the fire for England in this Old Trafford Test. He's applauded to the rafters as he walks off, gets a hand from more than one Australian, too. Green gets the wicket, back of a length wide of off and dragged down off an under-edge, perhaps a tired swipe after [checks notes] about four hours of batting 336/3
2.1 lovely, snaking line, takes the edge! Full enough to drag Duckett forward, well outside off in the end as the ball hits the seam and jags away. Just a defensive push, looking to feel bat on ball, and feathered through to Carey. Australia have their first of the day 9/1
27.1 short and nailed... but Khawaja snags it at midwicket! Far harder chance but he holds on to bring a much-needed breakthrough for Australia! Firmly pulled in front of square but it was in the air for a long time and Khawaja pulled off the nifty diving take with two hands. There was silence for a moment, before everyone realised what had happened 130/2

61.1 keeps shockingly low and Root is castled! That's barely above the bootlaces as Root prods down the line, around a good length, and has not a prayer of getting bat on that. The end of a magnificent knock, and another shift in the permutations 351/4
91.6 top-edged down to deep backward square! Brook took it on once more, as well he might, stepping to leg again but Hazlewood just followed him a touch, it's a steepler to Starc who grabs it well just inside the rope... the crowd gasp a touch at the replay, but he seems six inches from the sponge, with the shadow perhaps confusing the picture 474/6
83.1 bowled him, looking to go hard! Cummins gets his opposite number, Australia make their first breakthrough of the day. Pitched up on the stumps, wobble seam and it nibbles a fraction as Stokes whips across the line, takes a thin inside edge and then crashes into the timbers 437/5

93.1 dangled outside off, feathered to the keeper! Woakes' wizardry is deferred for another innings. Bend from out of the hand, the batter followed with high hands and an audible snick as Carey gathers without fanfare 486/7
95.6 pegs back the off stump! Wood hops back, plays down the wrong line and has his timbers flattened. That finishes the session, which is a bonus for Australia, saves them one last over 506/8
99.3 skied... and taken by the bowler! Five for Hazlewood, and England are nine down (but batting on). Broad backed away and threw the plumbing but only succeeded in sending the ball straight up, Hazlewood settling under it just off the cut strip for a straightforward catch 526/9
107.4 fired in straight, hit on the pads, given! Anderson reviews, is Bairstow going to be stranded on 99? Yes, that is smashing into leg stump, and Green has pooped the party at the last! 592/10

10.2 Extra pace and bounce! Up goes the finger for a snick behind! Khawaja looks a touch bemused, and reviews. Must admit, I didn't think he'd touched it but England were convinced! There it is! A tiny snick but palpable all the same! Huge wicket! It was outside the eyeline, no need to follow it, but wheels is wheels. 32/1

17.5 chopped on, Woakes gets Warner again! Probing line and it is all too much for Davey, who jams the bat down and diverts the ball into his own stumps. He'd battled hard but once again goes for a half-formed score. This lined up as the outswinger but actually came back off the seam, as Warner made a late call to play - fatally so. Woakes the man for England, his sixth in the match 54/2
67.1 low-slung wide of the stumps, Marnus cuts... Bairstow juggles it, and holds on! Nitin Menon is unmoved but YJB is adamant there was an edge and England immediately review. This could be HUGE! Yes, a big nick on UltraEdge, the extra bounce does the job, and Root has shaken things up in the gloom! Labuschagne has played brilliantly but has to drag himself away. England have opened an end up at last 211/5
32.3 bouncer down the leg side and Smith walks! Just like that, the extra pace makes the breakthrough. It's an attempted paddle-pull, mostly because he's caught in two minds, not because he thought it was the optimum shot. A cross-seam bouncer, doesn't come through as expected, a thin graze of glove, Bairstow gathers and that is a massive moment to strike! 100 Test wickets for Wood! 97/3
36.1 blitzed from the crease! That's just savage fast bowling, short, sharp, angled in at the body, rising at the splice, a half-cocked defensive flap on the back foot, again there's a lack of pace off the wicket that confounds his alignment, a simple deflection to a deep-set gully, Duckett back-pedals and now England are on the move! 108/4
