4.30pm The India players file through to receive their winners' medals! They're beaming with delight, every one of them, and so they should be.

"All the girls are incredible, the way they are performing, backing themselves," says captain Shafali as she breaks down in tears, thanking the coaching staff as the realisation of this team's achievement finally hits.

"No, the big one also," she grins when asked if this is the only major trophy she's going to pick up this February.

4.25pm Player of the match, Titus Sadhu, for her 2 for 6 from four overs says: "It's really surreal because all of us have been looking forward to this day for a long time now."

Player of the Tournament for her 293 runs (second - by four runs - to India opener Shweta Sehrawat) and nine wickets is Grace Scrivens, the England captain. "I'm not sure they were all very pretty wickets, but I'll take them," she says humbly of her contribution with the ball. She really led this England side with plenty of inspiration and it might not have gone their way today, but she has a very, bright future ahead.

"Obviously we're gutted with the way it went today. Our batting let us down, we've been so strong through this tournament. All these girls are unbelievable and I love captaining this side."

4.10pm India coach Nooshin Al Khadeer says "this is a moment we've waited for for very long... we have a very good future."

Shafali Verma, their captain, can enjoy an element of atonement, having been part of the senior side which lost the T20 World Cup final to Australia at the MCG in 2020, and plenty of pride after leading her country to victory in Potchefstroom, a maiden ICC World Cup triumph for an India Women's team. Could there be more of the same in store for her and her nation with the senior T20 World Cup set to get underway, also in South Africa, in less than a fortnight?

Titus Sadhu and Archana Devi set the tone with two early wickets each and England lurched from 22 for 4 to a total of 68, bowled out in 17.1 overs. England had a glimmer of hope when Hannah Baker and Grace Scrivens removed openers Shafali and Shweta Sehrawat cheaply, but Soumya Tiwari and Gongadi Trisha saw them home with ease.
