Player of the Match

India take a 1-0 lead in this three-match series with both sides set to experiment over the next two games in the lead up to the World Cup. The 2nd ODI is in Indore on Sunday. On behalf of the team, thanks for your company today. We'll see you on Sunday.

9.58pm Presentation

Player of the match is Mohammed Shami for his 5 for 51.

India captain KL Rahul: "It was as hot as Colombo and really humid. I think the commitment that the boys showed. We were put under pressure in the middle. We started really well with the ball. But the middle overs were tough. We've been talking about staying committed for 50 overs and we've all been working really hard on our fitness so that's showing. I went in in a tricky situation after keeping for 50 overs, it was tough for the middle order batters starting, but had a good partnership with Surya. We kept talking about hitting good cricket shots."

Australia captain Pat Cummins: "Personally I'm happy I'm back. First game for a little while. Good to get our first game here in India. Disappointing we didn't get over the line. I thought a few guys batted well and a few guys bowled well."

9.44pm India win by five wickets with eight balls to spare. A comfortable win for the home side. Australia were always short on runs posting 276 after a very good India bowling display led by Mohammed Shami's five wickets. The chase was set up by a superb stand from Gill and Gaikwad at the top. Zampa made things interesting with two quick wickets and had he held two return catches, one off Rahul, it might have been even more interesting. But Rahul and SKY guided India home with calm half-centuries.

Suryakumar Yadav: "That was what I was dreaming off when I started playing this format. Try and bat til the end as much as possible and finish the game for the team. I couldn't do that today but definitely loving my new role. I have been wondering what has been happening. The colour of the ball is the same. The teams are the same. The bowlers are the same. I think I was hurrying a bit. I thought, let's take a little bit more time. Calm myself, take it slowly and try and bat deep."

Sampath Bandarupalli: Only the fifth instance of four batters scoring fifty-plus runs in an ODI innings against Australia. Second time by India after the 1987 WC game in Delhi.

Nilesh Sinha : "Does this take India to no. 1 in ODIs??" We believe it does.

Ram: "With that win, are we the RANK 1 team in all formats now?" Likely to be when the rankings are updated.
