10.57pm Well, what a game that was. T20 cricket at its explosive best, across both the innings. Some stunning batting, some good bowling. And an India win in the end. Join us again on Sunday for the third game, which could decide the series in India's favour. New Zealand then, will be giving it their all to stay alive in the contest. It should be a cracking contest. For tonight, that's all on behalf of Ranjith and everyone else at ESPNcricinfo.
10.48pm Time for the presentation ceremony.
The player of the match is Ishan Kishan: "I was focussing on what I have to do today and just keeping myself in a good headspace. Sometimes you understand you're batting well and just try and watch the ball and stay in a good head space. I was looking to score as many runs as we could in the powerplay because chasing 208 you have to maximise the powerplay. [On domestic form] I just wanted to score runs and sometimes you do it for yourself, to answer your own questions on if you're good enough to play for India. Coming here and taking that same confidence, it was a pretty good day. [On being out of the Indian team and coming back] I just asked myself one question that can I do it again or no and I had one answer that I can play through the innings and get runs. And even if I get out, I just wanted to play good cricket."
Suryakumar Yadav: "[On the approach] I don't know what Ishan had in the afternoon for lunch, but I have never seen someone batting that way at 6 for 2 and ending the powerplay on 60-odd. But that's what we want for our batters to be able to express themselves. I was angry he wasn't giving me strike in the powerplay but I was able to get a hold of the conditions. I've been batting well in the nets, had a good break, and had a good practice session before the game too. Incredible effort with the ball. When they were 110 for 2, I thought it would be a 230-odd total but all the bowlers chipped in and took responsibility. I am really enjoying what's happening right now. The mood is happy in the camp and I want to keep them in that space."
Mitchell Santner: "[On a par score] Against these guys, 300 maybe? I think when you come up against a side that bats deep and the way India came out with intent from ball 1, for us it's about squeezing them where we can. [On their best XI] There are still some guys still to come and you want to make sure the guys are ready for the World Cup. Today we were put under a lot of pressure and it was good for us to learn and bounce back. [On his batting] It was a very good wicket and a fast outfield, it was nice. [The dew] It was there. As a spinner I was just trying to hold the ball and it can be challenging but we have to move on."
"I was doing a math practice paper, and I missed the better half of this innings. I come back, and I'm in a state of shock. This batting display was absolutely insane. Pumped to see SKY back in form" -- Wrong day to pick to be a good student, Jay. But I am sure your parents are proud...
Shivam Dube: "Amazing batting by Ishan and Surya. I thought Ishan played a different knock. Last game it was Abhishek, this game it was Ishan and Surya both. [Mood in dressing room at 6 for 2] I just told the physio to mobilise my back. Yes we were two wickets down but every player in the team has the ability to finish the game. [On his promotion] I just depend on what situation is there. Probably because of lefty-righty combination. Definitely we chased really nicely. You can't say what's a good total on this wicket. If you take early wickets, two or more and how you bowl in the powerplay. Trying to contribute with my bowling. One over, two overs, it's important for me and the team as well."
Baba Fasi: "What's the fastest team 200 ever scored in a T20I?" -- England did it in 12.1 overs vs SA in 2025, when they scored 304 for 2 batting first.
10.30pm Right, then what was that? India were 6 for 2 having lost Samson and their batting star Abhishek Sharma. But then Ishan Kishan went on a blitz, swinging away everything thrown at him. When Kishan and SKY reached their 100-run stand, Suryakumar had contributed just 19 to it! Once Kishan fell after a 21-ball half-century for a 32-ball 76, SKY -- who was on 10 off 10 at one point -- took off, and with good support from Shivam Dube, made very short work of a 209 chase. SKY finishes unbeaten on 82 off 37 balls, and this knock will give the Indian team, management and fans a massive confidence boost. Because, what's a better time for your best batter in the format to find form but just weeks away from a home World Cup? New Zealand will look back on a few decisions they made after things were looking good for them two overs into India's innings. Bowling Foulkes when Henry had started well turned out to be a pivotal mistake as he conceded 24 runs and helped Kishan get rolling. They never did come back from that over, and even dropped a fair few chances. They still can come back in this series, but their bowlers will be feeling the pressure after two majestic batting displays from India.
Daz into the attack
Parth Verma: "India is being mean to the home crowd here! They came here for 40 overs game! They have been shortchanged! Crowd should ask for a refund now! :P"
Batter on the comeback trail saw a bad situation - India 6 for 2 - and didn't flinch, scoring 76 off 32 balls
