Great start then to the Champions League Twenty20, we have seen a really close game. Do relive the ebbs and flows in Sid Monga's bulletin. Tomorrow is a double header, first Wayamba from Sri Lanka take on the second home team in the fray, Warriors; and then it will be Chennai Super Kings versus the Central Districts from New Zealand. Do join us then. On behalf of the team at ESPNcricinfo, this is Nitin Sundar signing off. Cheers!

Alviro Petersen, the winning captain: "I knew the boys will give 100%, we got good runs on the board, and the bowlers backed it up. We set ourselves 160-170, and towards the end we managed more.. 186 was a winning total, but Sachin batted well and gave us some nerves.. but the boys did well. We had plans for every batter, and Shane (Burger) did it well to double bluff him.. pushed fine leg back and bowled and then bowled the yorker.. We love the Bullring and thanks for the support." A roar goes out!

Sachin Tendulkar: "We probably gave 20 runs extra, all credit to Lions who batted well.. They picked wickets too at crucial moments. We were on track.. I thought my wicket and Pollard - we got out at the wrong time. Bowling and fielding looked rusty, we need to get charged up." He is putting it mildly.

Jonathan Vandiar is deservedly the Man of the Match. "I knew I could bat through the innings. I think we were looking at 180, it was a good wicket and I enjoyed batting on it.. First few overs it was holding up, but once you got yourself in, it was good to bat."

Presentations coming up. Jacob Zuma is there, as is Ray Mali.

Don't forget that man Shane Burger! What a game he had - Sachin and Pollard bowled..!

Kuldip: "When Ryan McLaren gave only 4 runs in the first over why was he taken out of attack still its puzzling me."

The fireworks go off at the Bullring, there is a buzz in the ground.. The Sachin fans are shocked into silence, but the home crowd are pleased with a finish that most would not have expected. Remember, the IPL teams did very poorly last year and several reasons were cited in hindsight - poor outcricket, lack of team spirit in a franchise that comes together for too little time in a year and so on.. Well, there will be more of that tonight.

Mumbai looked a disjointed team on the field, and conceded more runs that they should have.. They batted quite well, but Lions, bereft of stars or big signings, did the basics right - bowled the yorkers, fielded true to their name, and made every little thing count. It was enough for them to put it past the biggest franchise in cricket's biggest league.

Frylinck to Harbhajan Singh, 2 runs, That's the way it is done! Harbhajan swings it towards the midwicket fence, but the fielders in the deep underline the difference between these two sides one more time. Two fielders converge, one slides across, the other cleans up, and they save a boundary that would not have even mattered. It typifies the way this game panned out, the Lions have done the basics FAR better and ended up worthy winners.

1
Frylinck to McLaren, 1 run, All over! McLaren plays a deft cut threading the gap between point and cover.. Not what was required, he needed to be smashing them.. Single.. 12 off 1..

13 off 2.. No extras and Lions have sealed this.

19.4
1
Frylinck to Harbhajan Singh, 1 run, full toss on the middle and leg, Harbhajan does his best but can't send it out of the ground.. Couple of bounces to long off for a single.

Harbahan stands up.. Duminy will run for him.. Can he smash them now?

Harbhajan is in genuine strife here.. He swung at that full toss, and missed. It smashed into that sensitive area above the knee. The support staff is out there.. Can Bhajji stand up and smash a couple of home-runs?

KM is reminded of Sachin epics that ended in defeat. "Yep, it's all coming back.. Chennai 1999, Hyderabad 2009.."

Frylinck to Harbhajan Singh, no run, oh my, Frylinck knocks the wind out of Harbhajan with a full toss that hits him over the back knee, just over the pads, so flush on the flesh.. Harbhajan on the ground, another dot ball and Mumbai are going down here.

W
Frylinck to Sathish, 1 run, OUT, Satish is run out! Another god-awesome yorker, on the middle and leg, and I guess Satish got some bat on it, else he seemed as plumb as they come.. They took a single behind square leg and Satish wanted to come back for the second, and he was almost near Harbhajan at the striker's end.. Easy run out at the other end..!

R Sathish run out 10 (11m 6b 0x4 1x6) SR: 166.66

de Bruyn to Sathish, SIX, Satish smashed the covers off that one, it was pitched up, in his half and he smeared it over the covers - Top shot and this game is not over!

de Bruyn to Sathish, no run, Wonderful stuff from de Bruyn! Slow, loopy bouncer and Satish is flummoxed and fuddled as he tries two versions of the pull as it sails past him, and connects with neither
18.4
1
de Bruyn to Harbhajan Singh, 1 run, Harbhajan looks to smash this over long off off the back foot, and he does not middle it.. On the bounce to long off, and he nearly runs himself out looking for a second
18.3
1
de Bruyn to Sathish, 1 run, perfect yorker from de Bruyn, Satish was lining up to smash anything else, but this - he could only squeeze down to long on.. Only one

Harbhajan comes out! What fun!

18.2
W
de Bruyn to Duminy, OUT, annnnnnnnnnnnd gone! Not a very good ball this time, Duminy had the room outside off and the length to free his arms but could not time the launch over long off very well.. Easy catch in the deep for Petersen and Duminy is gone.. More importantly, two dots.. 24 needed off 10!

de Bruyn to Duminy, no run, hustles him with a smart piece of bowling, back of good length and no room for Duminy looking to bash to the leg side.. It goes through to the keeper

Frylinck to Duminy, 1 run, finishes with another pull for a single to retain strike.
17.5
2
Frylinck to Duminy, 2 runs, wonderful exhibition of T20 cricket! Duminy was moving around, Frylinck followed him and fired a yorker on his legs, Duminy was enterprising enough to pick it away towards midwicket and he was haring down.. Satish was even faster in responding and they pick two.. despite a great throw from the deep
17.4
1
Frylinck to Sathish, 1 run, back of a length outside off, this is excellent bowling, Satish stays back and looks to turn it to the leg side and gets a single behind square leg
17.3
1
Frylinck to Duminy, 1 run, slow bouncer to Duminy, he spots it but can't time the pull too well and picks just a single
17.2

Frylinck to Duminy, 1 run, length ball, Duminy whacks it but not much timing, down to wide long on.

Frylinck to bowl. Satish comes in, he can pack a mean punch.

Burger to Pollard, OUT, Burger does it again! Sachin and Pollard bowled in one day! Sachin's adventurism may have contributed to that one, but this was down to Burger's excellence. Fires in the perfect yorker on off stump and even Pollard, even in this mood, cannot keep it out.. He initially thought of smashing it, then realised it was homing in on the money, but by the time he brought the bat down, the bails were in the air.

KA Pollard b Burger 19 (13m 9b 1x4 2x6) SR: 211.11

Burger to Pollard, SIX, BOSH! "See my blade? Yeah, I use an SS bat!", Pollard seemed to say as he did away with the follow through! Length ball on middle, and he launched it straight over long on, and stopped the bat short for the papparazzi to click away.
16.4
0
Burger to Pollard, no run, another average ball from the man known as 'Cheese', full toss sliding down the leg, Pollard gets some pad on it and then the keeper saves it before it runs away for four
16.3
4
Burger to Pollard, FOUR, oh Burger, he's lost the plot here! That was poorly directed, ended on Pollard's pads, very full and he gleefully flicked it high over fine-leg, couple of bounces over the ropes
16.2
0
Burger to Pollard, no run, better length, full and wide outside off, Pollard looks to bash this too but makes no contact
16.1
6
Burger to Pollard, SIX, right, Pollard has got his eye in and is ready to drop-kick everything now! Burger ran in like a lamb to the slaughter and delivered a slow gentle off cutter, Pollard saw it coming a year earlier and launched it over deep midwicket

Senthil: "Sachin's wicket is not a BIG wicket its a BIGGGGGGGGGGGG (Bold.. Italic..Underline..etc..etc) wicket...." Sorry for understating that mate.

  • Lions reclaim lost loyalties

Initially Mumbai had the crowd's support, but by the end, by the sheer weight of their performance, the Lions were on the path to winning back the hearts their home fans

  • 'We were a family out there' - Alviro Petersen

It was, unarguably, by any measure reasonable or unreasonable, the biggest win in the hitherto limping Lions franchise's history, and Alviro Petersen knew it

  • Charged-up Lions stun sloppy Mumbai

Sachin Tendulkar the batsman nearly made up for Sachin Tendulkar the captain, but a charged-up Lions side completed a feel-good underdog win in a tense finish to kick off the Champions League T20

  • David mugs Goliath

Mumbai's visiting superstars are brought crashing to earth. A home team supporter soaks it all up

  • Pressure's on Mumbai - Petersen

Alviro Petersen has said the favourites tag will weigh heavily on the star-studded Mumbai Indians when they take on his low-profile side
