17.4 the lull after the storm! Vijay follows next ball, it is on a length outside off, Vijay has been trying to play from the crease and again tries to go in the air over the off side. He was in no position for that shot, but can't blame him for trying. Most of them have come off today.. Tame catch for long off 180/3
5.3 trapped in front, Mendis slows it down and it holds its line, Hayden attempts his favoured sweep but misses and is caught in front of middle, the umpire had no doubt 43/1
17.3 and Raina's carnage comes to an end. Wayamba will heave a collective sigh of relief here, coz he was headed for a CLT20 ton to go with his World T20 ton. Length ball on off stump, he moved away to leg side and looked to go up and over Mubarak and cover... did not quite get the height though and Mubarak leapt high inside the circle to haul it in. What an innings! 180/2

3.1 A picture for the ages! Muttiah Muralitharan, the man with most Test wickets, has caught his long-time captain and the man who held most of the catches off his bowling - Mahela Jayawardene - at the third man fence. He throws his hands up, those eyes shine like fireflies in the Centurion night, and he holds the pose! Mahela got to the leg side and looked to upper cut it all the way, timed exceptionally well, but not well enough to cross the smiling assassin at third man. What a moment! Despair though for Wayamba 18/3
0.2 what a tame dismissal! Short on middle and he went for the pull but it seemed purposeless, almost as if he was trying to work it around, it caught him high on the bat and lobbed up straight to square leg. One of his team's most experienced players, gone first ball, a horrid start 1/1
2.3 this was a coming..! Mubarak is thinking about the extra bounce all the time and is playing from the crease. This was not very short, angling across from the middle stump line as Mubarak played a meek little nothing-shot aimed at the covers. Outside edge ends in Dhoni's gloves. Not even a muted appeal. Seemed like they all knew it was coming. 18/2
4.5 Wayamba are sliding here, short of a good length and the batsman is caught in two minds, whether to work it on the on side or defend it on the off, the face turns just a hint but it's enough to produce a leading edge that sends the ball straight into the palms of mid-off 31/4
5.1 the procession to the dressing room continues, a conventional offspinner that but one Olku felt deserved to be sent into the stands, a desperate heave that, landed on a good length outside off, spun back in to beat the swing of the bat and just grazed off stump to dislodge the bails 31/5
17.1 Well, now we have seen everything.. only one Sri Lankan has been smiling today and his smile just got wider! Murali draws Shalika out of the crease in a manner that would have done the pied piper proud. Dhoni does the rest. Game over. 103/10
5.6 he's thrown his wicket away, fired it quick on middle and Perera had made his mind up, he was focussed on depositing it over midwicket, missed as it went straight on and we know the end result 35/6
10.4 he's given him, Balaji bowls a short one outside leg stump and he looks to help it on its way to the fine-leg boundary, brushes the glove on the way to Dhoni and the umpire has no doubt, the end draws near 62/7
12.4 can't keep Murali out of this can you! Wayamba will grumble, Sri Lanka will grumble, but he is smiling like a cheshire cat after jumping away to his right to snaffle one-time spin-twin Herath's uppish cut. Whatay! 76/8
15.5 seeya later Mr. Mendis! Ashwin draws him out with a flighter offering, Mendis is sucked in, does not make the pitch of the ball and misses. Dhoni is the king of minimalism behind the stumps. Collects and flicks away the bails with minimal fuss, with Mendis out of the crease. 102/9

Match Notes

  • Chennai play it like champions do

While Chennai were steamrolling their opponents, there was a definite sense in the stadium that a small part of history was being witnessed

  • Wayamba fall by the wayside

Wayamba's followed their flaccid bowling with batting that could most kindly be described as having a nice personality - bedfellows as strange as this do not a strong marriage make

  • Raina, Vijay maul their way to massive win

Suresh Raina and M Vijay absolutely mauled the hapless-looking Wayamba attack to score 155 off 90 balls between them, 52 more than the whole Wayamba side managed
