Match days

22 September 2024 (50-over match)

2.35pm That's it. Plug pulled. Gurgle. See you tomorrow for the reserve day!

Jacko: "If it rains tomorrow are there joint holders or is it a bowl off situation?" Joint holders would be the upshot... but let's hope the weather plays nice...

1.54pm If it's still raining at 2:33pm, we're abandoned for the day given the time it'll take to clean up. "Worst rain since we got here now," says Vish. The end is nigh.

1.45pm Vish has good news for the soggy protagonists at Trent Bridge. "If they share the trophy, they have enough medals for both teams because there were some leftover from last year. A truly elite tournament." Phew, that's a relief!

Meanwhile. It's still damp.

12.45pm Right, we have actual news ... sort of. The cut-off time for today's start is 4.02pm. If we can't get started by then, we'll be back tomorrow for a full 50-over game. Or what remains of it once it has rained again ...

If you want actual actual news, you're better off following the Singapore Grand Prix...

Philip Arnold: "cant believe the ecb didnt forsee the problems of putting a final at the end of September when the bad weather almost always kicks in... feels bad for the players who must have been souped up for this match "

12.31pm "Rain has picked up a bit, with a few more fans leaving for shelter..." Argh, Vish shocked me there with his update. Hello, yes, apparently there's nothing going on. As you were.

Andy: "Any news on the teamsheets? Somerset were looking at sending out the young guns who helped them get there, although they may be desperate for at least on trophy thisvseason!" I wouldn't imagine we'll hear much on that front for some time yet. No Tom Banton, of course, after his ankle injury during the Surrey match. So that's one space opened up.

This, in fact, is their matchday squad:

Somerset Sean Dickson (capt), George Thomas, Andy Umeed, Lewis Goldsworthy, James Rew, Josh Thomas, Archie Vaughan, Ben Green, Kasey Aldridge, Josh Davey, Alfie Ogborne, Ned Leonard, Jack Leach, Shoaib Bashir, Joe Heywood.

And here, for the sake of balance, are their rivals:

Glamorgan Kiran Carlson (capt), Sam Northeast, Tom Bevan, Dan Douthwaite, Andy Gorvin, Henry Hurle, Colin Ingram, Ben Kellaway, Jamie McIlroy, Ben Morris, Billy Root, Asa Tribe, Will Smale, Timm van der Gugten

11.50am Vish has been getting the goss from the coalface at Trent Bridge. It appears there's a debate between attempting to start the game in whatever window there is, then carrying on for a completed 50-over game tomorrow, and settling for a reduced-overs version and getting it done and dusted today, which is the umpires' preference. Either way, it is likely to be academic, as no-one really believes the rain will relent...

Les: "If there's no result, why not play the final at the beginning of the 2025 season. India came back here to complete an unfinished test series a year later."

11.34am Well. You want news? You've come to the wrong place. It's still minging. A dismally low chance of any play, and even though there is a reserve day tomorrow, the omens aren't exactly enticing then either. After that it's shared-trophy territory. Which would be something for Somerset at least. A half out of three potential domestic titles ain't bad…

Nick Friend, our chum at The Cricketer, will be launching a petition for the restoration of bowl-outs forthwith. Watch this space.

10.55am "Just started drizzling," says Vish. Meh. It is raining in my soul.

10.35am Vish is here! He has just arrived in Nottingham, through wind, rain and near car-crashes, and sounds as though he wishes he hadn't bothered. Or maybe his liver is still holed up in The London Palladium

"Not raining at the mo," he says, with as much optimism as he can muster. But obviously there are more than a few covers in place for the time being.

10.30am Welcome back to Super September, next stop of our whistlestop tour of domestic climaxes, we have the Metro Bank One-Day Cup final at Trent Bridge. Where Glamorgan and Somerset will be doing battle… hopefully. Sadly, the forecast ain't too hot for the moment…
